Ha ha Ian that was quite humorous (for you)

I can't go home to Northampton for two reasons. Avid readers will recall that Calis rumours confirm I am banned from England, and secondly I'm not from Northampton :D

Kieth, i find this quite remarkable, your experience is so unreal i could have posted it myself word for word, i have been here for ten years have a successful business also, the amount of snide remarks i have herd (never to my face) from so called xpats (friends) you could not believe, i had not put it down to jealousy but as you mentioned it in your post it hit me like a hammer (dongggg), my daughter also attended school here and became fluent in Turkish, reading, writing the language and we tended through her friends she had made to mix with both expats and locals, now i have nothing to do with the expat scene (my choice) and i am returning to the UK as soon as possible when i have tied things up here, as you say i will never regret moving to Turkey i have met some fantastic people and become close friends, but enough is enough, i wish you and your family all the best for the future, you seem, like me a very positive person, so you will have no problems there, good luck to you and your family.

Nobody could believe it better than me :D

I am very positive and didn't bring much in the way of negative thoughts back with me from 5 years in Turkey. Loads of positives that I see every day in myself and family, especially the kids. I love the direct talking style of the Turks, particularly over money, and that has seeped into me, as have many other traits (all useful and good ones I must confirm!) learned. When we had a topic on here along the lines of which members people had met, I realised how many fantastic people that living in Turkey had allowed me to meet, British & Turkish. A few wierdos, a few backstabbers and hundreds of new friends - for life I hope - all down to Calis/Turkey/CBF. I'd never leave a place because of a few bad eggs, in fact we stuck around longer just to irritate them  ;) - I guess if they are going around slagging you off it at least means they can't stop thinking about you :D

The UK is great when you've been away for a few years - it's got so much to offer. When we had been back for holidays or short visits and done the Tesco bacon/cheese run, there was a real excitement about going up and down the aisles filling the trolley. Like a child in Toys r Us :D - and 16 months after returning, I still have that feeling a little bit when going to Tesco, saddo that I am  ;)

Good luck with your plans too - I saw a programme on TV about wills and heir hunters looking for beneficiaries. One will was from a guy who died at the age of 80 in the house he was born in. We did a little better than that with our lives  8)

We have lived here 5 years now and still very happy.  Yes the interest rate has gone down, and elec, water and most things in general gone up.

We came here on a budget and have stuck to it.  We made an agreement that we wouldnt do the day time drinking bit, yes we might have a couple of beers on a sunny afternoon but it doesnt extend to the evening. We go out once a week, two maybe in the summer.

Miss our girls but Sam is in Oz so she would still be so far away if we lived in the UK. Our Stacey loves Calis so much moving over here when she leaves the army.

Of course we miss English food and relish "Blighty Grub" when our friends bring stuff over.

As you know we are on the Carnival Committee and this has given us immense pleasure and we met some wonderful people.  Ex pats who whinge and moan and get drunk we give a wide berth.

Took the dog out this morning for an hour, heard no traffic, no hoodies, no sirens, just peace.

If I could have a home in a beautiful English village, with a local pub and money in the bank, that would be brilliant, as I do think Great Britain is a very special country. I have a beautiful home here, with pool, views and of course sun.

If I had to go back tommorow wouldnt have any regrets, nothing is set in stone and home is where the heart is.

We are lucky then
We worked/ lived in Turkey from 88 till 2000.
Now back, happy in Fethiye and it's our home.
But, Im still working abroad, so we are only there 3 - 4 months a year.
Maybe that insulates us.

I have read this thread with great interest and have been very impressed with the personal nature of the posts.

We have never been in a position to consider moving abroad, but had we been, I don't think either of us would have seriously considered it. Of course it would have been lovely to have a place in Calis which we could spend time in when we retire but why on earth would we want to leave such a wonderful country as Scotland permanently.

I've banged on about the UK v Turkey debate on here before. Would I be correct in thinking that the balance of the debate has shifted in favour of the UK.

(PS I tried searching for the last debate but couldn't find it - anyone remember it's title).

I don't think so. I think there is still a steady stream of people who are planning to move from the UK to live in Turkey, and good luck to them. My feelings have been given several times and are concise and clear. Don't have a business, don't work, don't lend anyone any money, remember British doesn't necessarily mean trustworthy and agree a price first. Do all that and enjoy your retirement.

There is a chance that people reading posts like mine might be put off moving out permanently but I doubt it. People who have the desire in their mind to go will go. Nothing anyone could have said would have stopped us going, I know that. I hope topics such as these don't put them off at all, I hope they help them avoid the pitfalls that are there to plunge into.

Excellent comments in your last post Keith. I know of your situation all too well and to pluck another one out of the air, say, Smudge and Magical Garden. Also you know that we have had problems just as holiday home owners. In spite of these examples I would relocate tomorrow. Trouble is the missus won't. As you state the major point is that I would be in retirement. I wouldn't want or need to work (I've done that already for 45 years). I wouldn't be dependent on interest rates or such. So I agree that several ex pats returning home should not deter any would be new ex pats  8)
