Well? The Final 23???
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:34:40 AM »
Not too many surprises but one thing bugs me...

A scenario...

We are 1-0 down in the semi final with 3 minutes to go. England players flood into the box as a wonderful through ball to the right wing puts in...

Shaun Wright Phillips or Theo Walcott..?

The more I think of it, the more I think it had to be Walcott, every day of the week :-\

Surprised me.  BBC Sport News reports that he was dropped because Cappello wanted him to go outside the defenders and he kept cutting inside.  Seems a strange reason if it is to be believed.  Bent should have gone and Heskey left at home, biased I know from a Sunderland supporter, but how many goals did Heskey score last season?

Ah but you don't appreciate the benefit of the work off the ball/link up play/space creation for other players that Heskey apparently gives the team. Neither do I actually, and never have.

Walcott doesn't appear to have improved much since the last World Cup to me. OK he had  good games against Barca and Croatia but that isn't enough in my mind. SWP will work harder and can play either wing. He's also a good reader of the game and will track back when the full back goes forward.

Lennon (if he stays fit) will be more dangerous on the right wing as his final ball is much better than Walcott's. He doesn't appear to hesitate as much when taking on defenders either.

My view anyway.

COME ON ENGLAND!!!

Yes I agree Lennon is the first choice - I don't see SWP has done much to make me sit up in the last 4 years either though.

Is that 'tactical speak' for he does bugger all during the game but looks good?

Heskey does actually hold the ball up quite well and if we need to use him then he will link up OK with either Defoe or Rooney. My first choice paring is Rooney and Crouch though. Bent has scored lots of goals in an average team but doesn't seem to link well with Rooney. Right decision again from the boss man.

Not an Heskey fan but he will work his nuts off for the team and others will benefit from him.

Well I had this conversation with Tinx a while back and we did agree with that. The point is though, whereas people like you, Andy & I think we know our football, we must accept (perhaps) that since successive England managers have picked and played Heskey, they must be right and we all must be wrong? We must bow to their collective knowledge but I still don't see it...
