I think they understand football over there more than most nations and will undestand the reason. Once the competition has finished, I would then remove it.

You would like to think so - they are very proud (and rightly so) of their national flag - I would hope they would understand and maybe support you as well - especially as they are not involved ?

In WC 2006 most bars had more St. George's cross bunting and flags than pubs in England! Also many bar staff painted their faces in England colours. I think you'll be fine  ;)
