C1 - agreed and the shape of the EU is the critical point - it could well be floundering even more in 18 months as the whole world is so nervous about it's perilous, debt ridden condition - with some notalbe exceptions!!!

My point is - the axis is moving - Turkey upwards - Europe / UK in the other direction and it is clear Turkey knows this will increasingly be to their advantage - what that will mean - who knows!!!

it could mean cetain french views of protectionism creep in and a tarrif / tax on all non eu manufacturered / services. this would be sold to uk as lowering our input of cash, help the germans our. and hit china and turkey etc. we would all end up paying more for every thing but when has that stopped polititions from doing anything which gives them more control. upwards or downwards Turkey still along way behind western Europe on most mesurable points. still got to control inflation and make it's people pay tax in a proper and fair way, and get the kids to start school earlier etc.

The discussion on Europe was only a small part of the interview. He responded well to Stephen Sakurs(spelling)cross examination.

Mehmet Simsek's main point was that Turkey now has more self confidence and will do what is important for Turkey.

The same as USA,Europe and Israel  do what is in their best interest.

"Who would have thought that until recently Turkey would have become Israel's biggest "friend" in the region "

Turkey was one of the first countries in the world to recognize the State of Israel in 1949
and the first Muslim state to do so, Turkey has been "Israel's biggest "friend" in the region "
since 1949, until now that is.

Perhaps, during their meeting today ,Barak Obama will tell Binyamin Netanyahu to kiss and make up with Turkey.

I think that the current posturing is for domestic consumption. The status quo will return in the not to distant future.

They are politicians after-all!
