Most insurance companies state in the small print they will only cover items if there is a safe and it is used, when completing a claim form this is not unusual for them to ask where the "personal" items were kept, not sure a mop bucket would count.

My house was burgled twice in the space of a week last September( once when I was asleep), so I know how you feel and you have my deepest sympathies. I haven't really got over it; I am paranoid about hiding things before I go out and shutting and locking windows.  I am still here but things are not quite the same as before.

This is not going to stop them, we know of someone who also did this, the thieves threw the safe down the stairs almost demolishing the wall at the bottom of the stairs, probably hoping the safe would open in the fall.

Think it would be difficult to do this as we have a spiral shaped staircase. [^]

Iwas burgled some years ago in turkey and they took nearly everything bar the kitchen sink, once bitten twice shy.I also have a bolted down small safe but i never keep much in it.Never put all your eggs in one basket when in turkey i have several hiding places and spread things about so if i get done again i might lose abit but not all.I cant reveal where i hide things but if you think about it there are so many places thieves would not dream of looking in turkey. For instance would they look in the fridge?and i sleep on my passport and documents etc.Keep safe and be street wise things like this are on the up and up in turkey i feel for these people. And with the use of mobile phones they can watch you follow you and inform the person in your house if you were on your way home,so theres little or no chance of them getting caught, take care.

Just thinking about places to hide valuables. Obviously from an insurance point of view a safe is the best option so perhaps we should make it even more difficult for them by hiding the safe in an usual place? Most people that I know bolt their safes to the wall inside a wardrobe or a cupboard but these are the first places they look into and safes bolted to walls can be prised off because the internal structure to which they are attached is not that strong. At my place we have those beds with a storage underneath the mattress so a safe could be securely bolted (or even welded) to the metal bedframe and then as a secondary measure the two frames could be padlocked together.  Even if the burgulars guessed that the bed was the hiding place the effort of getting a double bed out of the house should be too onnerous even for the most determined of burgulars. I suppose that someone will say that the bedframe could be hacksawed into pieces but how long would that take?

Surely the best way is to leave your front door ajar when you go out and balance the safe on top of it. In this way we can all enjoy a classic comedy moment and have one less scumbag walking the streets.

The most secure type of safes are the type which are fitted into the concrete floor, and the door lies flush with the floor level. As they are set into the reinforced concrete, they are virtually impossible to remove in the short time that the thieving sons o' bitches wish to be in your property. These are quite easy to 'retro-fit' into your home, and can be built into the floor under your sofa, armchair etc. I should imagine that they must be available somewhere in Turkey.

If anyone does buy a safe in future, it may be a good idea to collect the safe in your own transport, rather than trust the supplier not to disclose the delivery adress to 'nefarious acquaintances!!!!

Very sad post, Rimms, hope all works out for the best for your friends.
Gordy.

Just a thought for those of us who are computer literate. Why not scan your passport into your computer and email a copy to yourself as a picture file. That way you only then need to go into an internet cafe or to someone who has access to a printer/internet to print off the file and take to the authorities. You could do this with all your important documents for the hols and just delete it and replace as required. Be careful not to do it with credit/debit cards and bank details though - a little too risky me thinks.
