Jimmy Greaves.. Who would have thought it?
« on: February 25, 2011, 15:49:01 PM »
So Jimmy actually has a feminine side after all.  He is selling his collection at Auction in England next month. ;)

"Footballing legend Jimmy Greaves' collection of Clarice Cliff ceramics is one of the highlights of the Clarice Cliff and Art Deco Auction at Woolley and Wallis Salisbury Salerooms on 9 March 2011.

Jimmy Greaves joined Chelsea Football Club as a schoolboy in 1955, and after scoring 114 goals in one year in the youth team, he signed professional terms in 1957. After a brief spell at AC Milan he joined Tottenham in 1961 for £99,999, a fee arranged by his manager Bill Nicholson so as not to burden him with being the first £100,000 player. He won the FA Cup twice with Tottenham and was a key member of the England squad in the late 1950s and 1960s - scoring 44 goals in 57 internationals.  His links with ceramics can be traced back to his first professional tour to Holland where he bought some Delft as a present for his parents, a trinket which he has kept to this day. His collecting of Clarice Cliff post dates his football career.

The collection includes a full range of Clarice's output including vases, plates, conical sugar sifters and a full Crocus tea set. The collection comprises 43 pieces, and goes to auction with estimates ranging from £50 to £1200.

Clarice Cliff was the most prolific and possibly important Art Deco ceramics designer. Born in Staffordshire in 1899, she served an apprenticeship at A.J.Wilkinson's Burslem factory. Her most famous work is probably her 'Bizarre' ware designed between 1928 and 1936."

Is it his Feminine side or was it simply a good investment that he is now offloading as the prices are now falling.

Ahhhh the great Jimmy Greaves, an idol from my yooof!  Great player, real quality in and around the penalty area, paricualry in the six yard box.  Real shame he wasted his time playing for all the smaller clubs in London like Tottingham, Chelski and West Ham barrow boys....

I was thinking about this - what do CBF members collect? Anything interesting? Even if it's boring we'll pretend it isn't! Let us all know  :)

I dont collect nowadays as not easily available here, But when I lived in the Uk and being fairly bored on our nights out in the pubs, I liked to check what the condom machines in the bars loos were offering, This led to my collection of different shaped and flavoured condomsm all out of vending machines, I still have the collection here, I got a friend to bring them out as I didnt fancy explaining to Customs! Kangaroo flavour condom anyone? :D

Sorry, I have no comments about `collecting` Just adding to `usedbustickets` comments regarding Jimmy Greaves`s footballing abilities..he was my icon to  ;)   what a goal scorer... a `goal poacher` supreme !! had the privilige to watch him and that great  Spurs side of the early to mid 60`s very regularly :-)  Jimmy used to walk around ... chewing gum ..in and about the  penalty box for 85 minutes of a match with little involvement... but he made  up for it with  5 minutes of him per match being pure `magic` with his speed over a short distance :o, goal sense, and football brain  !!! Football goal scoring genious [^]

I found that most of my customers in England who collect ceramics are women, but most of my customers in Scotland who collect old Scottish Pottery are men, which is why I was surprised to see Jimmy Greaves collected Clarice Cliff.  I don't ever recall a male collector for this sort of pottery.

I have to admit to buying a piece of Clarice Cliff, but it was for the wife, honest.
My collection is Lomonosov porcelain animals and birds.
