Washing Machine in Bathroom - but UK?
« on: March 09, 2011, 21:53:52 PM »
One thing we liked in Turkey was not having the washing machine in the kitchen, and we would like to do something similar here - i.e. put it in the bathroom. Are there any electricians out there who know if that is allowed? I was thinking to have it fixed wired (not socket). That's only because I assume the rules will be strict, I'd actually be happy to have it plumbed in and when in use run an extension lead from the landing :D

I know regulations used to be strict on electricals in bathrooms but would welcome any advice from people who know the rules.

The rules used to be no portable appliance in the bathroom, as a washing machine is not portable then I think you would be ok.

Only run it off an extension lead if the person operating the machine is not significant in your life.:D

The idea of a washing machine in the bathroom is a brilliant idea, not sure how noisy it will be on a hollow wooden floor though.

Washing machines operating from a plug socket in a bathroom are commonplace throughout southern Europe. However I do think Bewva has a point about wooden floors. Most I have seen have been on programs like "A Place In The Sun" and have been on solid floors.

Why not the bathroom, you have shavers, hair dryers and hand dryers, why not a washing machine.  The only thing a friend pointed out to us when we enquired about putting a washing machine in our bathroom the life of the washing machine due to steam and condensation. Open a window?[?]

I'd suggest a call to the local council building control and ask them.
Mine is in the garage.

That's a strange place to have a local council building control.

I bet there was no issue with planning permission though. :)
