Hello to all members of the calis beach and fethiye forum.  I haven't posted a topic before, but now I'm hoping to get some advice from someone.  My villa, which is remote, has just been broken into.  They smashed one of the windows, which is double glazed.  I'm sure that anyone who's had the same thing happen will sympathise with the anxiety that causes, when you're thousands of miles away from your Turkish property, and can't get there for several weeks.  Anyway, I know I've got to decide on either security bars or an alarm system, and wonder if anyone has any views on the pros and cons of each?  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Kind regards Jan Dale[?]

I opted for an alarm for the reason that we have a person on site 24/7 so hopefully an alarm would alert him to a break in.
I have also heard that the scum that break in often prize security bars off the wall then break in leaving you with a right mess to get sorted and I didnt want the hassle of shutters or gates at the doors.
If your villa is remote then you need to consider if an alarm would be heard by anyone? or indeed the burglar may have time to remove the bars because he is less likely to be disturbed in which case neither is going to deter them.
The other advantage of an alarm is you can use it when you are in bed as this is when we were burgled (before we fitted the alarm).

Our alarm phones us when the alarm goes off, we can add extra numbers, so could add a neighbour who is out of range of the sound of the siren.  Maybe this would be your answer.

Oh and hi to you.  I am sorry your 1st post was such a sad one.

Jandole, I am afraid I cannot offer any definitive advice, the way we have secured some additional security is by asking our Turkish neighbours to keep a watchful eye on our apartment, to date no problems.

Good luck in any event and I hope it will not happen again.

Hi & welcome to the forum.

Why not both? Better to cover every option if that worries you.

Hi and welcome ot the forum.  Had you considered leaving things as they are.  I often wonder whether the extra security measures suggest that you have soemthing worth stealing.  I used to live on a very wild housing estate in the UK - I did get broken into once - didn't add any security and never got broken into again - was there for 12 years - neighbours with alarms were targeted including both those attached to mine.   Just a thought  :-)
