I'm Having a Breakdown
« on: October 21, 2011, 21:09:20 PM »
Taking the in-laws back to Edinburgh airport in the family charabanc after their annual visit for the twin's birthday was my job today. Drove there, nothing remarkable as usual, stopped in the drop off area and said goodbyes etc. Back in the car, 50 metres driven and there is no power - no acceleration, pulled away from the payment barrier like a slug - and what followed was a nightmare journey up the motorway. OK going downhill, I hit 58mph at one time - sadly I also managed 32mph going uphill, being overtaken by everyone :( - I have found inclines I have never noticed in my life. Took (actually, rolled) the car into my trusty local garage and they put it through the whole diagnostic analysis and guess what is wrong with it...

Nothing! It drives 100% fine [:o]

I can't work out if I am unlucky or lucky today :D

Did you actually manage to get a human to look at the car or did they just rely on the computer read-out

I believe humans looked too and took it for a drive. I explained how my journey had gone and they said to leave it with them and they'd have a look. Because I don't like surprises and prefer to know what is ahead I said "can you tell me how much it will cost" and in all seriousness he replied "I can't tell you how much it will cost, I'll need to look first". I nearly smiled.

Please tell me he didn't take a sharp intake of breath and start shaking his head.

In my experience that is a very expensive combination. ;)

My car wouldn't start the other morning... sounded and looked like the battery was dead. Called out my mechanic... he gave me a jump start :P! Changed the battery for a new one, this morning it wouldn't even tick over!!!

Was the handbrake off??

Actually sounds similar to a problem I had with a minibus.  I worked with adults with learning disabilities and after a particularly horrendous trip to a supermarket things were a bit fraught in the  bus.  I pulled into a garage for petrol and payed,  I jumped in and drove away but the engine seemed sluggish then it went down a hill ok and went sluggish again on the straight.  I was trying to work out what could be wrong and traced the journey.
Bus had been alright leaving supermarket and the problem only started after I had filled up the DIESEL  bus with petrol :-\
Red face for me.  However seemed after it was cleaned it went so much better.

Sounds as thought he has his priorities right even if he can't fix motors. ;)

Funny you should say that Heather - my car doesn't have a 'physical' handbrake as such so that did cross my mind - but from a previous incident I at least know that wild horses couldn't shift that car even a metre with the handbrake on.
