I am and have had to change my work diary. I work with young people in residential care and as my local authority will be on strike, I am unable to fulfil my meeting that day.

This was in my step daughter's school newesletter:

Unions are not obliged to inform the head teacher who will be taking action with the result that we will not know until the last minute what the arrangements will be.

I have no idea if we will be affected. I find it bizarre that the staff haven't told the headteacher if they will be taking action or not.

Our local secondary school e mailed us on Friday apologising for the loss of one days education but the Head thought it better to advise parents now that they would be closed for the day instead of pupils being turned away on the day.
The local Junior school are still deciding - Those striking do not have to inform their Head until the day - making it difficult for the Head to decide whether to stay open or close.  (the girls just want both schools closed so they can help me at work for a few hours in the morning and then go to the cinema in the afternoon)!

As a Mum who works her own hours I can swap my working days about to fit in with school hours etc.
Many Mums & Dads have already used up this years holiday allowance and may struggle to find alternative childcare.  Our local junior school is offering emergency child care for the day.

With the prospect of my contributions rising to 9.5% & retiring on a pension based on my present contributions , I will not be attending work on 30/11/11 either. You have to stick to your pronciples- why join a Trade Union, enjoy all the benefits of negotiated terms & conditions & then break a picket line when the going gets tough. I must admit though, the timing could have been better. There would be a lot more people willing to strike if they were not losing a days pay from their Xmas pay packet.
