Car Hire - Edinburgh Airport
« on: February 17, 2012, 15:57:52 PM »
I am going up to the Edinburgh area for a quick trip in May, need a hire car from 10am on the Sat to 8pm on the Sun, here are the quotes from all the companies based at the airport:

Alamo: 54.82
Enterprise: 56.24
Sixt: 67.49
Thrifty: 70.73
National: 78.00
Europcar: 84.14
Budget: 86.74
Hertz: 93.96
Avis: 97.56

Amazing difference when you think all quotes are for a group a car, glad I bothered to check 1st!

I think a Sandy's going to be a tad expensive from 10am Saturday to 8pm on Sunday.

I can't remember the situation at Edinburgh, but its worth checking what "airport" means sometimes. I have been caught out at other airports where the cheaper companies ain't actually at the airport - they have a desk there but put you on a bus to their compound a few miles away. This involves waiting around for shuttle busses etc and can be a pain if you are on a tight schedule.

Driving to Cowdenbeath for some stock car racing, a Sandy would be a bit too strong guvnor for that!

Good luck to you SuperC if you are going to drive in Edinburgh. It's a nightmare and GPS is useless.  If you get into the wrong lane no one will let you out.  We made that mistake in December and spent 20 minutes trying to get back where we started. Thought the old fella's head would explode.

Jacqui,I have not got GPS and always trust AA route planner.  Once you get a road number it is easier to follow.

Cowdenbeath should be ok as he won,t have to go into town.

He will be fine in Cowdenbeath, but GPS or Route Planner is no good in Edinburgh. Every time we visit they have changed the road system and send traffic in a different direction, it's a total mess, just one wrong move into a different lane and you are lost.

Im going to hire a car with anycarhire.com pick up at Gatwick and drop back at Heathrow 9 days later and its £105, might be worth having a look at Mark and see if theyre cheaper than your quotes for a couple of days

Thanks all.

Alamo are based in the airport, I need that for the return as the timings are a bit tight, it's a jaunt I do once or twice a year so have got used to the system (& the roads) now, even though they tried to confuse me with the "new" Forth Rd Bridge relief road a couple of years ago, missed my Mc'Dees on the way back on Sunday night!
