Thomas Cook are now weighing hand luggage prior to boarding. If you exceed the 5K allowance, which includes anything you buy from Duty Free then they are charging you £40.

I had mine weighed at Glasgow Airport last year (but at check in, before duty free) and I was over 5kg - which I knew anyway - and was charged £20 and had to have it put in the hold. I'd be incredibly surprised if duty free weight is being included in the 5kg - did this happen to you?

Yes & I'm from Glasgow too. I usually pay an additional £40 pre-flight for an extra 10K. This weighing before boarding but after duty free is the latest 'we've got you now situation'. My laptop and personal things plus 2 x 1 lire bottles would be over 5K.

Definitely - two litres of duty free must be 2.5kg+ alone. I do hope this is not going to be the norm...

You have two children though scunner so there allowace would count as well. Ithink my six year old will be taking up drinking Bacardi

If it's true and adopted by most airlines it would surely be disastrous for the duty free shops as we'd all wait and buy on the plane. Which would also suit the likes of Thomas Cook too of course.

As you say Scunner, a smart move by Thomas Cook, as people would need to buy duty free on the flight. Sometimes it's as cheap to by alcohol at the supermarket and just wrap it securely and put it in your main luggage - not ideal but this weighing hand luggage just before you board the flight will be the norm. $:-\$

I was reading about this on another site the other day and someone posted a printout from TC to state that duty free is NOT to be included in the weight. I'll see if I can locate it.

I have been known to go into Tesco Express AFTER checking in and loading up with goodies to bring back to Calis - OOOPS. Personally I'd rather have the Tesco munchies than duty free SO, where does all this stop?

This is a bummer if true as I usually stock up at duty free and Boots the Chemist when through passport control.Definately puts me over the 5kg limit.Any website available where I can check this?
