Are the days of cheap booze in the UK over - for the lower classes at least?

The Prime Minister, David Cameron is determined to end the scourge of ‘binge drinking' across the UK by tripling the cost of low-priced alcoholic drinks (in supermarkets).

This is despite serious reservations by some of his cabinet colleagues who are concerned that these price changes will hit poor voters leaving the champagne set relatively unaffected.

Up here the banning of multi-deals on alcohol came in and the supermarkets got round it within seconds. Asda's "3 for a tenner" wine promotions are now banned, so they immediately started selling them for £3.33 a bottle. Nett result, thanks to the Scottish parliament's concern about winos, they now don't need a tenner to get cheap wine, they only need a few quid. Idiots.

And I believe I read recently Scunner, that they are dropping the push for a minimum price on alcohol.
