Registering walk with Jandarma ?
« on: March 23, 2012, 10:27:12 AM »
I am setting out on 27th April to walk the Lycian Way (in its entirety).  I am trekking solo and as a matter of safety  I would like to register some information with the Jandarma with regard to movement details and contact information etc.

Does anyone know the best way to do this ?, do you think I could just go along to the Jandarma stations in Karagozler or Olu Deniz and speak to the duty officer, giving him my details ?.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on this matter, maybe from anybody who has done something similar or has any ideas, thanks in anticipation.

Tony.  :)

The local Jandarma are probably going to be pretty nonplussed about your plans, as you're only going to be in their jurisdiction for a few miles. Whether or not you advise them of your plans out of courtesy is your call. If you do, make sure you go with someone who speaks Turkish, as at this time of the year the English speakers may not have been drafted in to the area yet.

I'd recommend that you keep in touch with a "basecamp" by phone at least 3 or 4 times a day. When phoning-in give your current location, departure time and ETA at your next stop. Agree an amount of time as leeway and, if you haven't contacted "basecamp" within those parameters they should raise the initial alarm IN TURKISH through the Oludeniz Jandarma Station.

....Thank you Alan, most helpful, I will be checking in with "base camp" on a daily basis, I just thought it would be belt and braces by informing the Jandarma prior to setting out, again thank you (and Heather07 ),for taking the time and effort responding to my request I really appreciate it.  :)

Keep an eye on the Trip Advisor and Thorn Tree forums as there are usually a few Aussies, Kiwis and Yanks on the Lycian Way at the same time as you're on it. They might be good for company.
