Mobile phone chip

Hi,
We are coming over in a couple of weeks and was wondering the best way to use iphone 4.  Usually we just use it but as we're coming for an extended holiday and the charges are so high, is it possible to get a pay as you go micro chip anywhere out there, that will make the calls home more affordable? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Thanks for the response Eric, after reading that I don't think I'll bother, certainly not going to pay a registration charge for a 4 week holiday. Will just make the occasional call or txt home & keep in contact via Facebook & whatsapp which is free! Just thought I'd ask as thought there might be a cheaper way to make calls & text.
