I hear on BBC News that police have today said that "Savile was a predatory sex offender"

I don't doubt it - but when did it become the job of the police to publicly announce someone guilty of something without trial or full investigation?

An unsavour business but the family deserve credit for having Savile's headstone removed.

"The family members are deeply aware of the impact that the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery," Savile's family said in a statement.

"Out of respect to public opinion, to those who are buried there, and to those who tend their graves and visit there, we have decided to remove it."

Yes it must be absolutely crushing for the family to see their relative go from (seemingly) loved celebrity to despised sexual predator in a matter of months. Taking the decision to remove a gravestone must have been an awful thing to have to do.

Unfortunately, I think the family would have had no choice but to have the gravestone removed.   There is no doubt it would have been the next target to be defaced.
I was also surprised to read that his coffin is encased in concrete..

Very little mention of the girl that did stand up to him and was punished for it, and in the interview with Freddie Starr, he denied an allegation with a girl saying the girl in question was in an approved school at the time, as if to justify any denial, personally he had liar written all over him, and I would be interested to see the result of his police questioning,

I remember that in the reports at the time - apparently to safeguard valuables that may be buried with him. Now you have to wonder if encasing him in concrete might have been because they knew all this would break one day...
