Problem on flight via Istanbul
« on: November 02, 2012, 13:34:33 PM »
When we originally booked our return flights with Turkish airlines via Istanbul, we were delighted that our connecting flight to Dalaman was just 2 hours after our arrival in Ataturk from Manchester, but par for the course, T.A changed their internal schedules which now means an overnight stop in Istanbul. After some argument, T.A have agreed to cover the cost of the hotel accommodation, however, I'm not holding my breath that they will keep this promise.

My confusion is now regarding my luggage and duty free purchase.

I suppose I will need to clear customs now in Istanbul and collect my luggage accordingly? But on the International leg of my flight, we have a 23kg allowance, the following day is a domestic flight where the allowance is only 20 kg. I also guess that under this arrangement we will not be bussed to the International terminal on arrival at Dalaman and I should change my transfer pick up to the domestic terminal?

The second worry is duty free purchase, if we buy some booze in Manchester then we won't be able to take liquids through the domestic check in the following day?

Just wondered if anyone had come across a similar problem and found a solution?

Cheers all.

Maybe not an ideal solution, but during your overnight in Istanbul, could you not put your bottles into your hold luggage?

Hi Liz, already thought of that one but at the rate Chris is going, we're already about 20 kilos over weight and I have the added problem in that they may reduce our allowance by 3kg each on the domestic leg of the flight.

We travel this way all the time and they don't reduce the allowance on the domestic.

Thanks, that's one of my problems solved. Do you use the domestic terminal at Dalaman when you arrive?

Sounds like my kinda girl! Just done a UK trolley dash myself - went out with 8Kg & minimal hand luggage, came back with 20.3 kg & let's not discuss the hand luggage after I'd done the airport shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Technically shouldn't they be keeping your baggage anyway?
Its one ticket from Uk to Dalaman so should be one baggage allowance of 23kg, the only thing that's changed is a longer wait in Istanbul.
I think you're going to have to ask them to be certain.
You will come into the domestic terminal at Dalaman.

I agree with you Linda but surely I will have to pick up my luggage in Istanbul? And to be honest, I wouldn't be confident for the airline to keep hold of it overnight and reunite  us next morning!

I know the flight into Dalaman lands at the domestic terminal, but whether they bus us to the International terminal will probably depend on what they do about the luggage.

Anyway, it sounds like we will have a good night in Istanbul, it sounds like we might have to drink our duty free !!!

If we overnight in Istanbul we have to pick up our luggage. They don't allow another option.
We clear customs there then the next day we fly down and exit at the domestic terminal.
If we go down the same day they transfer the luggage and then bus us to International at Dalaman.
They never seem to be strict about weight. And they have no limit on the amount of bags.

George, just a thought that when I used Pegasus from Stansted via Istanbul, my duty free was put into a sealed clear bag & it wasn't a problem when I went through the domestic security gate for the Dalaman flight in Istanbul. You could try telling them in duty free in Manchester that Istanbul is not your final destination & get them to put your bottles in a sealed bag.
