Remembrance Day
« on: November 10, 2012, 17:44:46 PM »
Last year (?) when Tinx led off with posting photographs of fathers in WWII I couldn't find mine. Now I have.

This was taken on the main street of St Helier, Jersey and shows my father giving the salute at the head of his troop in the Liberation Parade of May 1945.

Thank you.

Yes my father was a remarkable man, which I only realized some time after he died (when I was just 15). His father died in WWI when Dad was a baby. Before the war his father had been a fireman - and anchorman for the Carmarthenshire tug-of-war team. My father, and his three  brothers and one sister, were brought up in some poverty by a single mother in a tiny cottage in a small village (less than 100 population) deep in the hills of Carmarthenshire. Despite what would appear to be these handicaps he gained a place in a local grammar school which his mother ensured he was able to attend (presumably at some considerable financial sacrifice). He then became the first boy from the village to go to university. It was his degree that enabled him to become an officer in the war.

So, I am very proud of him. But I am sure all of us are proud of our family members who served our country in the armed forces and who, if they are no longer with us, we will remember tomorrow.

Magnificent picture Colwyn, you can almost see the pride at what was achieved after all those dark days.
