WE completed the coastal journey to Antalya last summer, and very nice it was too.  Mind you if the road had been anything like that shown in the 1961 photo, the journey would almost certainly not been started!

I'm with UBT, I have no problems driving in Turkey, but I doubt I could ever even attempt that piece of road :(

Many members will recall the "sea road" way into Fethiye from Calis, where all the trendy restaurants and new prom are now, used to be just the road and the sea right next to it - no pavement, wall, barrier, gap - it was road and where you normally see kerbstones the sea started . It was fairly usual to come round the tax office bend onto the main drag and see a car about 5 metres out  :)

2 years ago we drove from Calis, over the mountain route to Antalya, on to Side, then back along the Coast road to Calis, a fascinating all day trip but started very early and finished late! That road reminds me of the Mountain road from Masjed e Sulaiman to Ahwaz in 1977, when it was dry it was steep and rocky you would "ski" down in places and always went through at least one tyre each way, and when wet slid about uncontrollably. Why on earth did we do it? a) there was civilisation in Ahwaz (beer, soft beds, air-conditioning, other pleasures  :) ) and b) it was the only way in and out anyway, the low road was worse!

I have friends who visited Calis in the early 7o's and we met them for a beer on the prom last summer, they said it had changed a bit  :D There are still so many places to explore around calis, last year we almost got Up Mount Eren but the car just wouldnt make it and I am now too old to walk up!

Thing is, I sort of mourn the passing of the undiscovered places -- when Ayia Napa Beach in Cyprus had one wooden hut for cold drinks on it and the road to Platres was a track! When you would make 2 or 3 attempts sometimes to land in your old twin propellor aircraft, when if you wanted to go from one Island to another the only way was the little ferry.
