I love the idea of a Grumpy Pub. There is a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown London that is packed every night yet the staff are incredibly rude but the food no doubt is the business.

I am feeling a bit sorry for the people running this new place though. I hope if they ever read or hear about this topic they know it is all a bit of fun albeit at their expense. I am sure they would never have imagined the use of the word "fun" would generate so much comment!

I hope if they ever read this topic they appreciate that they got 13 pages of free advertising for their new venture on by far the busiest website in town  :)

I genuinely wish them well, it is hard to get established over there.

Yeah, Scunner - they will get untold numbers going there just to find out what the 'fun' is all about. We will certainly give it a whirl in June.

Good luck to them! It can't be easy opening and running a new business.

Perhaps it will be like what some turks call an english  pub or bar, peanuts on the bar and a union jack on the wall .

I remember well a few years ago that one of the bars on the front were advertising an Elvis impersonator...The heading was."Is Calis getting like Benidorm"...... Well no it wasnt and it isnt now...Give this couple a chance for goodness sake. If it fails its their money not ours...Will wait for your review Mark..

Quite right mercs

It could be, possibly, that we could go to this place and have great fun. But we'll have to wait to find out.

When I lived in London, it was like a right of passage to go here. Good to know that after all these years it is still there  :)

Unfortunately they tarted it up a couple of years back, may have lost some of its edge and charm.  LIke filling the building floor by floor (5 of them) as the night got busier, queueing up the stairs, putting you on big tables with a group of other people you didn't know before the meal, and ignoring you if you dared to complain, or telling you that you've over ordered on the food, cheapest crockery and utensils, small glasses and beers/soft drinks served in cans, and I don't know which charm school the waiters went to, but customer service focused it aint.  I loved it as it was, but like all these things some smart arse thinks you should change a successful formula, same as all the glitzy places in Brick Lane now, what happened to the old curry cafes with plastic tables??

Grumpy Pubs, now that idea has legs.  I know a few grumpy old sods who would, like me, be only too pleased to frequent such an establishment.  Now what are we going to call it, here's a few suggestions:

The Grumpy Arms
The Kings Grumpy
The Royal Grumpy
The Grumpy At Rest
The Grumpy Carpenter
The Grumpy Bricklayers Arms

And we must allow the twenty somethings into the place for a bit of sport.  Put them right on their dress sense, the fizzy pop lagers they drink, blame them for X factor..... oh that would add icing to the bun for a good night out ;D ;D
