When I lived in Calis and when I visited, I walked on my own all the time. I never felt afraid and I was never approached or accosted by anyone. THEN 18 months ago I received threats from a couple of expats, whose friends decided to issue similar threats. I wont go into the details apart from saying that the originators of the threats were a real couple of shady cretins.  I then decided to arm myself with an alarm and some legal spray which would mark them with red dye which couldn't be washed of for a week.  Unfortunately, we live in hard times and we should be cautious but don't let it spoil your enjoyment of Calis.

Well I actually asked because my son and his fiancĂ©e had a biy of upset a couple of years ago. They were staying at that huge hotel, is it Orient or something and as they walked back, some guy came very slowly past on a scooter and tried to grab her bag. I'm just wondering if they were very unlucky or if it's a common occurrence  because it's not dark near there.

I live quite close to that stretch of road and it would be fair to say there have been a few incidents - usually very late (midnight onwards) further down from The Orient on the main road away from the main street and scooters / bag snatches have been mentioned previously.

Like others say - take care as you would anywhere at that time and if in doubt take a taxi.

Oh errrrr!!  I'm not taking any chances. I'll stay in. As long as I've got my iPod and Kindle I'm fine.  The terrace where I'm staying looks big enough to dance on anyway!  :D

the precautions that we always try to take while walking back late at night, but must say i never walk alone at night, always with the OH.. is to walk with traffic coming towards you, never coming from behind, and always have a torch in our hands and if someone looks a bit dodgy we light the torch up and shine it around there faces so they are aware we can see them... as yet we have never had anything dodgy happen to us but have know people that things have happened to......

Well, I won't have an OH with me so I'm just not walking at night.  I wonder why they do it because as a race, I find them really nice gentle people. Do you think it's that they think because we go on holiday, we're all stinking rich?  There's no use me being scared about it, I'll just follow the advice I've been given here.

Funnily enough that's exactly what my other half says.
