Walking alone at night
« on: April 02, 2013, 10:14:47 AM »
Please could I have some guidance from anyone who knows Calis well.  Is it safe to walk alone at night.....sort of 10pm to midnight?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In this day and age, I wouldn't advise any woman should walk alone at that time of night.  :o

It also depends where you are walking of course.

Mrs B I would take the same care as I do at home and not walk home alone.  I would feel perfectly safe on the Prom or in Calis main street but wouldn't take a chance anywhere outside of there.

Find a taxi driver you can trust, one who comes recommended, make a deal with him and use him on a regular basis.

I certainly wouldn't walk home on my own late at night in Calis or anywhere else.  Aim to be home before darkness falls or take a cab.  Stay safe.

it is as a few other people have said Mrs B whereabouts you are etc... I would be fine on the prom in the evening and where it is well lit and lots of people, I would however not walk up the streets with no lighting no people etc it is not worth the risk, also make sure you have your wits about you etc....

Good idea Marggie,  We found a great taxi driver and have his card, he will pick us up at any time and we have used him for friends and family and he has also just picked me up in the evenings too.  Taxis are so reasonably priced, I don't see any point in taking chances walking alone at night.
I would apply this rule to anywhere in the world, not just Turkey.

I agree with everyone else.  I would feel ok walking along the prom and maybe up the main strip as far as the traffic lights (dolphinless roundabout!) But once away from there, there are so many side streets that are poorly lit it's just not worth the risk.  I've even felt unsafe in some areas late at night walking with my OH.  Thankfully nothing has ever happened, but there have been incidents posted on here about women being followed and attempted bag snatches that it's best to remember that, even though we all love Calis, we also need to keep a reality check and be aware what's going on around you.

Stay safe Mrs B!   :)

Thank you everybody.  I don't walk here at night. It's either the car or not at all.  I just find it too hot to walk during the day in the middle of summer, so I thought I'd maybe have a walk at night but I'll find myself a good taxi driver if I want to go anywhere. Any numbers for taxis would be much appreciated too now I know not to walk. Thank you all again.   :)

For those who need. You can get pepper spray from the gun/fishing tackle shops around the market in Fethiye.
But if you do get one don't forget to carry it in your hand when your walking. It's no good in your bag.

For those that wonder, yes my wife does have one not that she has ever used it but it's just a precatuion when I am traveling out of the country.
