Calis Beach

We were at the Sunset Beach end of Çaliş last weekend and there was broken glass everywhere, among all the other rubbish and down in Gemiler I saw syringes on the beach again among all the other rubbish.

And our friends staying at Sunset have come across a dead turtle on the Çaliş beach this week.

Cleaning the beach may not be something for the children to be doing in these circumstances.

By contrast Ölüdeniz beach was absolutely spotless when I went down there one morning last week.

OluDeniz looks fabulous on the webcam I must say. Spotless and the water sprays are on the grass too.

Nichola, agreed, I've been to Olu several times during the winter and have seen guys cleaning the beach throughout that time, I know they have building work underway there at the moment but that will complete any time soon and the beach front is a credit to them.

On the other hand, I live here in Calis and for the past 11 years have been one of its biggest supporters, If I add up the numbers I'm sure that I'm personally responsible for hundreds of people visiting during that time.

This year I have 6 of my very closest friends coming over in May and to be perfectly honest, I'm really embarrassed to show them where I live.

I'm planning an itinerary for their visit, we will be going to Akaya, Gocek, Kargi, Faralya, Dalyan, Olu, Fethiye and Uzumlu. It breaks my heart that the only place I will take them to in Calis is down to Guvens for the beach party and I'll use a massive detour to avoid the disgraceful state of our main roads to get there.

I'm not the kind of person to run down their home town, I'm from Liverpool and proud of it, need I say more? But Calis and Gunlukbasi look like a joke at the moment and when compared to similar resorts in Spain and Portugal and get this, both of those places are cheaper to get to and better value for money once there. I worry that by taking one step forward, this place has taken several steps back.

100% agree with Rimms - it's also such a shame that we are blessed with such a beautiful bay and a place who's name has two words, the second one being plaji/beach and the state of it is of little importance. Even if there is a clean up it's just the one at the start of the season then it deteriorates daily till the end of October.

It's hardly a big beach either - 10 metres from back to sea?

Look at another place where they take their beach seriously and realise it is the key to everything else being successful - Praia de Rocha in the Algarve - a massive beach that takes some looking after. You can have lunch at a beach restaurant and still be five minutes walk from the sea! And guess what - well into season, we didn't see one fag butt, piece of broken glass, beer can, piece of litter.

We tend only to go to the beach up our way. Max's old place or the Birlik. They look after their little bit throughout the summer.

I agree with Scunner - They really know what a positive effect a nice beach can have in Portugal. I've never seen it dirty in the 11 years we have been going ( and you can get a pint for 1 Euro   )

Just face it . The authorities do not have the brains or vision and don't give a damn. And it will never change!

Well, the good thing is we are close to many lovely places which are easy to get to.  Shame about the beach. I have hardly spent any time on it. Still love sitting on the seafront looking at the beautiful view and the unbeatable sunset.  But I must admit we spent a lot of time else where (mainly Fethiye) last year.

You may be right apollo but actually my opinion is that everyone thinks it is everyone else's responsibility and while nobody thinks it is theirs, nothing will change. Sadly a scruffy beach cleaned once in time for a six month season seems to be all that is required in this holiday resort - and some years that only happened because of volunteers arranging to do it, otherwise nothing would have happened at all.

Every other country I have been to have had people out every single morning, cleaning every last thing before anyone is up and heading for the beach. One day, or once a day - two beach cleaning policies a million miles apart.

Yes I am the same - I doubt I have been on the beach for any significant length of time ever in all my years - and perhaps the reason is because of the lack of housekeeping.

The belediye charge hefty fees for their fairly crappy sunbeds but don't think cleaning the beach around them is a job that needs doing? It's preposterous. You look after something then charge people to enjoy your efforts.

I've never thought of those uncomfortable bench like things as sunbeds. The belediye rent them out as little platforms to keep you above the crap.
