I think it is pathetic and disgraceful that the beach is only cleaned once a season. It tells me that when it is done it is only because people think there is something to be gained by the beginning of season clean up for the tourists but what about the people that live there all year round. Don't they count for anything? I have been there a few times recently and the whole beach looks disgusting. I felt very sorry for the people that had come early in the season having to sit on such a dirty beach.

And, all that broken glass that over time just gets buried and some of it is likely to be missed in the one off clean up and is just lurking there waiting for some poor soul to tread on it and end up with a cut foot.

But also I think I am right in saying that it is meant to be a protected area for the turtles or at least part of it is and the dead turtle found by my friends and their three young children had been decomposing there for some time.

If the beach was routinely cleaned then there may be some incentive for people to use the bins or take their rubbish home with them.

Couldn't agree more. My year old granddaughter nearly had a cigarette end in her mouth had we not noticed it in time. No entertainment for them and no clean beach which is a shame really because a day at the beach would be a change from the swimming pool.

I think it would be a good idea to either pave or deck an area of the beach, I think this would be nicer to sit on and also would be a lot easier to keep clean?
It would be expensive but would bring more people to the beach, more custom for bars on the prom.

I agree whole heartedly with all the above   (cringing at the baby with the cigarette end, ugh!)  but if everybody were to take responsibility for themselves, how much nicer it would be. I have sat and fumed many times, (as I'm sure have many of you) watching sunbathers get up and walk away leaving cans, bottles, and god knows what, for someone else to pick up, and it's aross the board nationality wise, but that's not going to change. We haved walked the road from the Karagoslar boat yards round past Aksaslar, Kuleli etc  many times, and the piles of rubbish along the route are shameful. All of you who are lucky enough to live locally know far more about it  than we do and I can imagine the frustration of wanting to show your visitors your home town, but being too embarrased.  That's really sad.

I agree that people should take care of their own rubbish on the beach but if they are sitting surrounded by empty cans and fag butts they are far less likely to.

I remember the first time we visited Red Island on a boat trip - it could have been that we were the first people to ever discover it - till we sailed round to the side we were mooring up for lunch at and saw carrier bags of rubbish strewn everywhere. It was such a disappointment.

Glad to hear that the beach at Olu is looking good at the moment. We spend a reasonable amount of time down there when we are over and in general even at the beginning and end of season it is quite clean. But I have never seem any "cleaning patrols" that you get in other countries, which is a shame as there will always be that minority who leave litter behind.

As a non-smoker I cannot understand why those that do indulge in this habit cannot do something to take their butts away with them as on most beaches this is a common issue and a shame.

Mind you a ban on smoking outside might help

I think there might be be one consideration that might have been overlooked in this whole saga of council provided services, that is you get what you pay for. It has been my observation that the cost of  "council tax" is extremely cheap there, around maybe £100 per year. Do you think this is relevant?

I think labour costs are reflected in this. The bin men won't be on £20k per year that's for sure.

Yes but that is reflected by the going rate for the population as a whole, which is also reflected in the general cost of living which to us Brits is cheap.
