a friend of coming over here with jet 2 and is under the impression she can only board with one piece of hand luggage and that a duty free bag is classed as two pieces. Does anyone know what the answer to this one is please

No it isn't, it's one bag plus a bag containing goods bought at the airport. Tell them to relax  :)

My friend and I were travelling back from Alicante in January with Ryanair. THEY claimed that you could NOT have a duty free bag and your hand luggage.  They insisted that it was ONE bag only.  When it was pointed out that the advertising hoardings all over the airport stated that under EU rules, passengers could have one piece of hand luggage PLUS one bag containing duty free, they would not listen.  They actually made some people RETURN their duty free if they weren't prepared to combine it in one bag.  They all make up their own rules and no amount of arguing or pointing out the EU rules - 'they rule the roost'.  Adding the duty free to our hand luggage put it over the size restriction and weigh so we had to pay for another bag. I hope you don't encounter this type of problem.

'This does not include additional duty free shopping bags, which must be placed within the 10kg one carry on bag prior to boarding. This one carry-on bag rule is agreed to by all passengers under Irish contract law at the time of booking with Ryanair and cannot be amended or interfered with by a Spanish regulation which has no effect under Irish contract law'

From Ryan Air website.
