The real experts at scamming these machines are coming to the UK next year - the Bulgarians & Romanians.  The only good thing is the fact that this government are running us into the ground so we'll have no money to scam. (Nothing to do with Calis I grant you - BEFORE someone comments).  The enclosed HSBC ATM in Calis was good but the other ATM's at the taxi rank have always been a bit iffy.  I hope the culprits are caught and there are no problems for people using these machines.

According to my 30 yr old son who is with us at the moment - in the UK it was working like this:

They stick a transparent strip - like the one you remove the cellophane from a pack of cigarettes - into the card reader - and it is stuck at both lips of the card reader.

The thief then comes over to help you and watches you try to get your card out - which has actually not gone all the way in and dropped into the reader - but looks as though it has gone in.

After numerous attempts to try and get your card out - including using your pin to try and release it - you give up and go home to ring your bank.

He then gets his tweezers out - pulls the strip out with your card and goes off to use it.

A few years ago a CID officer went to an ATM at Asda in Toryglen.  He made a withdrawal and went and did a bit of shopping.  A couple of days later he discovered that there was £1000 missing from his account.  It transpired that a gang were sitting in a transit van in the Asda car park watching the ATM as they had set up a device from which they were able to'clone' cards.

Beware of Romanians. Last year,a friend of my mother in laws got mugged after taking money from an ATM. The trick they used accorording to the police worked like this. She was in the ATM queue, the guy behind her saw how much money she took out of the machine & put chalk mark on the back of her coat. She walked away & a soon as she turns a corner,BANG.  Not nice. The police actually caught a gang of 5 Romamians operating this activity & due to previous offences(for which they weren't jailed),3 of them have since been deported.

He then gets his tweezers out - pulls the strip out with your card and goes off to use it.

They sometimes use that method in the slot where the money comes out, making you think that the money isn't coming out of the machine. Instead it's stuck to the strip so when you give up and go the thief comes along and knows how to get it out and retrieve your money.

Luckily my dad noticed this at our local branch a year or so ago and ripped the strip out with his money attached then took it to the local police station to inform them. It would've been satisfying to wait and see the thief's face when he realised his plan was foiled!

Which is the ATM by the taxi rank? We often use the one by the bridge just before you walk onto the front, is it the same one?

There are if my memory serves me right Miss M three ATM'S by the taxi rank we have long ago stopped using them due to the amount of "stealing and conning" that seems to take place there some what to often, we have used the one by the bridge (cant believe I typed the word fridge first of instead of bridge!) so far so good we have not encountered any problems there fingers crossed long may it continue  :)

Thanks Karennina, think we have only ever used one by the taxi rank once but were lucky. It's more out of the way than the one by the bridge for us, fingers crossed for no problems too! (knocking on wood as well just to be sure!)
