Help please
« on: May 29, 2013, 20:52:18 PM »
Hi. I have not been on for a while and feel quite guilty asking for help but am getting myself into a bit of a state. We have a duplex apartment off BMB on a small complex. One of the other owners was over last week and noticed a bad smell from our apartment. They gained access and nearly every ceiling is covered in mould as well as some of the walls. It is quite bad and obviously needs to b treated.  We were not planning on coming over this summer due to lack of funds but have people coming to stay in August so need to get problem sorted.  My husband is a builder and so is going to fly out to do the work himself. So is it possible to get anti mould paint locally?   He is going to bring out some treatment with him. Did look into shipping paint out but it was very costly.

Apparently some mould has got onto our three piece suite and bedding.  Will steam cleaning work on the cushions and if so can anyone recommend someone?  I am guessing that the bedding will have to be replaced but just need to really keep the costs down as this really could not have happened at a worse time.  We will be installing air bricks to help combat the problem.

Sorry for the long post and your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks Barbara x

Yes you can get all sorts of paint here, anti mould breathable stuff, my neighbour bought some last week.  Go for the best and there are many paint shops on the Gunlukbasi Rd.  There is a place called Kartel or similar in Tasakya that steam cleans sofa, cushions rugs which I use every year, havent got the number to hand but will dig it out and post. If possible get a Turkish person who can speak some English to go with hubby when getting paint and shop around.  A good brank make is the the one with the Elephant on the tin.  Hope you get it all sorted and find out what has caused all this.

Thank you busy bee for replying so quickly. Would you be kind enough to ask your neighbour how much they paid for the paint. Just want to get a rough idea so that I can work out the finances. Thanks again x

The problem is nearly always due to moisture/condensation - I think caused by the great differences in temperature. As you will know, it can go from torrential rain to baking sunshine and back again all in a day - and without airflow you can get all sorts of problems.

As well as air bricks, consider doing what the locals do - leaving their bathroom and toilet windows open permanently by having sturdy metalwork fitted for security. All internal doors left open when not in residence, and if possible an end of season management check to ensure all these are done for the wetter months ahead, and to move things like wardrobes away from the wall etc.

You can bet that air circulation is 95% of the problem and solution - so it's at least not a major structural expense to tackle.

thank you Scunner.  Luckily we have grilles fitted and I have already asked for those windows to be left open. Golden Moon have been now regularly opening the apartment up so hopefully the smell will be better when hubby gets there. Thank god the other owners were over and were pro active as the embarrassment would have been unimaginable. Thanks once again xxx

You wouldn't have been the first to have suffered embarrassment of this type I assure you. It's not a bad time to be tackling it (although I am sure you would rather not be tackling it at all) - things will at least be dried out when your poor hubby gets over to work on it, in horrible internal heat :(
