Sadly the dog has been put to sleep :(, it was suffering from Leishmania which is highly contagious to humans and animals, if you came into contact with this dog be sure to wash down properly including your clothing.
it is a parasitic disease spread by infected sandflies and has no vaccines available in Turkey to prevent it happening, although rare in Fethiye area it is prevailent in Kas and Kalkan areas so it is possible the dog came from that area.

Anyone coming over to Turkey for a holiday if you can obtain these vaccines from your local vet or elsewhere we will pass them onto the vets in those areas  :)

Thank you for bringing this six month old dogs plight to our attention, she is now at peace.

poor wee thing.Only 6 months old and succumbed to this terrible disease.Life just isnt fair sometimes. At least its not suffering any more and has gone over Rainbow Bridge to be pain free. This is when we are lucky to have such caring people such as Animal Aid who were able to be on the scene asap and help this poor unfortunate animal.
Does this disease pass onto other animals and how can we protect other animals from contracting it?Does anyone know?

From the DEFRA archives:

Leishmaniasis is caused by a protozoan (Leishmania sp.), which is spread between animals by sandflies. The disease is present in Europe, the Middle East and many tropical countries. Each year several cases are diagnosed in dogs reported under the DACTARI reporting scheme that have spent time in a country outside GB which indicates that infection has been picked up abroad. The organism can cause disease in people. Affected animals may lose weight, develop skin lesions and swollen lymph nodes, become lame and have recurring fevers.
