Markets
« on: July 18, 2013, 14:56:06 PM »
I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times and in great detail but when I have searched the forum I just keep getting 'supermarket' topics.

I LOVE markets. And the Turkish markets were another one of the many factors I decided I wanted to move to Turkey. Loads of locally grown produce and locally made items.

I have stolen this list from 'Turkey's For Life' and know that it is not entirely comprehensive - Gocek isn't on it for instance. Anyone care to fill in the gaps or point me in the direction of a complete list of markets please?

Sunday - Çalış market & Alsancak market (Izmir)
Monday - Hisarönü market
Tuesday - Fethiye market
Wednesday - Bostanlı Pazar (Izmir)
Thursday - Çiftlik market
Friday - Fethiye farmers' market, Üzümlü market
Saturday - Patlangıç & Karaçulha markets

Is the Friday Fethiye farmer's market held in the same place as the Tuesday market?

I think Gocek is also Sunday. You can get a boat trip for Fethiye (and probably Calis as well)

Genuine Fake
The British holiday maker has always loved the bargains available in Turkish tourist resorts such as Oludeniz and Fethiye especially those that look and feel like they are a proper brand.

Believed to be exempt from any brand control the market has grown and grown in Turkey and a big industry has grown up to copy the latest cool, classic or trendy brand product to hit the streets.

The Turkish shopkeeper has always been more than willing to oblige and buy in stock because the lure of a knock down price for a top class brand icon seems irresistible to tourists.

In fact some of the products are such good quality we wonder why they bother trying to imitate at all.

But it looks like the days of the Genuine Fake could be over.

I agree GordonA but tourists coming to Turkey for the first time like to look round the markets and buy the designer fakes.  When you live in Turkey the markets tend to be the place you go for fresh fruit and veg.

Personally I don't care a jot for 'designer fake' anything. I don't lust after designer items be they genuine or otherwise and such products are not what lure me to a market. And if the shirts my son's friends brought back recently from Turkey are anything to go buy, Gordon is right.

The fresh fruit and veg and other local products are more what I'm interested in.
Although I'm not totally immune to Turkish Tourist Tat! *oooh shiny things  :o *

Must add - this cracking down on counterfeit goods will have quite an effect on a lot of Turkish resorts though I would have thought.

But as has already been mentioned, the quality of these goods can often be quite excellent, so why not leave off the names and forge their own styles?

I purchased 6 Weird Fish T-shirts for 2TL each in
Istanbul and the following day they were 1TL so I bought another 6  ;D
I assume they were 'made in Turkey' seconds but I couldn't see any fault.
Weird Fish Weymouth confirmed them as genuine (£20 each in UK) RESULT !!!!
