I've also been in a similar situation as an employer. Under legal advise I made no public statement, although I did everything possible privately to help the widow of the employee.

You have just answered the quandary Jacqui, now, I KNOW that you are not naive enough to believe that any boat trip operator with a hint of decency/concern to future clients, would post the fact that one of their clients/crew members, was killed during one of their boat trips, bad publicity. I firmly believe that, if it was against Turkish legal protocol to post condolences re. this sad event, we also would be prevented from expressing ANY comment on here, at least in Turkish facebook world anyway. A very poor demonstration of concern from ANY of the boat trip operators, in my opinion.

It is against protocol in the UK to discuss things under investigation by the authorities with affected parties, that said it does not stop them possibly making a statement to the press etc offering condolences surely.
I do tend to agree though Gordon it could be more damaging to their business putting something on their website whether they are at fault or not. (and before someone jumps in I am not blaming C & T as I don't know all the facts).

Agree with Bewva and (strangely enough) Gordon,  having just looked at the other travel trips websites etc, there is not a mention or condolence from them.   So they may condemn C&T for nothing on their website yet I think they are thinking "There for the grace" etc...

I have been on many many boat trip and when living there sometimes 4 times a week and I honestly can not remember once a captain or staff saying don't swim on left/right, so if C&T did captain did say this to staff or tourist then good for them.  however, staff often say in broken English careful and point to boats.

Also, if you look on your car insurance it states or used to, if you are involved in an accident you must not admit to fault or give an opinion as it could invalidate your claim.

I know for a fact that the company were very upset at what had happened, like I said earlier I was in the office the next day with intent to book our next boat trip and what looked to be most of the staff were there and very solemn, nobody wanted to talk business.

a sad day

There are reports on T.A. from people who were on the boat at the time.  One of the passengers notice the man in the water and pointed it out to the staff.  Apparently, it was the some of the tourists who jumped in to get the guy onboard and there was no first aid kit on the boat and none of the staff where trained in first aid.  One of the passengers gave first aid while they waited for help.  Then a fight broke out because one of the passengers asked for a drink as they felt faint and the staff wanted to charge them.  All this is documented by  some of the passengers and the lady who was on the trip and whose's daughter saw the man in the water.
I think lessons should be learned here.  First aid treatment and first aid kit on board.
I don't know about Turkish law, but in the U.K. a company would be in deep trouble for not having the basic first aid equipment or a trained member of staff.

Why assume the fault lies with C&T?  Whatever actions were taken after the accident, somebody will always find fault, especially when they are in shock! The sad fact is a young man has lost his life. People should show some respect and  Let the authorities do their job.

The lesson to be learnt is that it's Turkey, not the UK or the EU.

Expats and tourists are always banging on about 'if it was in the UK or EU' when something goes wrong. It ain't. It's a different culture. Get over it !

Surely condolences are intended for the family of the deceased!

So what good would it do for C&T to post anything on Facebook or their web site. Exactly whose benefit would that be for! I very much doubt the family will be looking on there!

It's absolutely ridiculous for people to say they don't care because they haven't posted condolences on public forums. Some people need to get over themselves.

I wouldn't post anything either. Mainly because I just generally don't - I find it feels inadequate in such sad circumstances. Also Facebook is a minefield, one you don't fully control. I could imagine them (C&T) getting huge amounts of abuse and criticism - which doesn't help anyone at all.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't.
