I remember when I said we were emigrating to Turkey, it was when there was all the ballyhoo about bird flu, and my friend at work said "Oh you can't go there they've got that bird flu". Yes, they had at some small poultry farms up in the Anatolian outback.

We also got the family blackmail of "we'll never see you it's so far away", they have all been out here for holidays since we moved, even our ex next door neighbours who had never flown before.

All thought Fethiye was brilliant and knew we had made the right decision when they saw how happy and relaxed we were.  It's not all plain sailing, you will get totally frustrated at times but on the whole I would say we are happy we came and stayed. So go for it, if it doesn't work out at least you gave it a shot and won't spend the next few years wondering "what if ...."

My wife and I have an apartment in Calis and we try to visit at least 3 times a year and one day we would love to spend more time there but not live there,  when we first planned our first holiday allot of my friends and family said why there why not Spain,  you know what the Turks are like you’ve seen midnight run my first reaction was to think small minded people and to ignore them and I really am glad we did we have met some of the nicest people of all nationalities. We have stopped going to Spain or Portugal and have now started to visit other parts of Turkey (we went to Istanbul as part of our last visit to Calis and hope to go again next year).
When I am on Holiday I always have a wallet with a chain that attaches to my belt sometimes people look at me and must think it’s because of pickpockets and muggers that frequent the streets and bars of Calis but it’s a bit of a habit now and it started in Barcelona when a old man in his 70s tried to pick pocket me, so where ever you go in the world there’s as much chance of something happening to you as there is in Calis Beach  :D
Hi , thank you for your reply , nice story , this is how we think too , no Spain and portugal for us either .
We laughed when you said you have a attached  chain to your wallet ,because i got a chain from the police in uk they were giving them out , so we too do the same , attach to wallet to hubbys belt with chain , so if pickpockets do try and get the wallet they will be in for a shock as it stretches, does the chain , they also can't be cut off , so we go about happy  knowing if they want to tackle a 6 ft guy , my hubby ,  not me ha ha  .I too will ignore all comments too form family , Our friends live in Turkey and uk and are very happy to listen to our plans without been judgmental , soooooooooooo lets us all look forward to our futures come uk or turkey

On the same visit to Barcelona my family and I where sat having breakfast in the hotel the hotel was more for business people than tourists when I noticed a dodgy looking man loitering  around a table full of business types a woman had hung her hand bag over the chair she was sitting on, while I was watching this man I never noticed my wife trying to catch my attention until she grabbed me by the shoulder and said in no uncertain terms to stop ignoring her and that someone was  trying to talk to me  as I turned round this guy was stood over me asking me something  in Spanish then it clicked he was a lookout for the other guy I told him to go away but not that polite anyway the two men ran out of the hotel nearly as quick as Usain Bolt. I then went and told the receptionist what had happened she said in broken English that I was very lucky because normally the lookout will stab you so they can make their getaway without being followed
I have never been back to Barcelona and don’t think I ever will

We've been accused today of running away. Not in an unkind way, but I was asked why we're planning to live in Turkey and what we are running away from.

I said we are doing less running away and more running to .....

I am going to shamelessly nick this line next time we get that response.  :P ;D

I like you, Menthol. You think like me.  :o

You could not have said it any better , we feel that way to , running to not away from , I know in your other post you said my family  will be worried about us ,  sisters NO ,  just meddling , getting my kids upset with negative stuff they keep saying to them .
My youngest daughter says go for it , you only here once and if this gives you both a better life , get going and she said to my other daughter stop being selfish because if your husband got a job aboard and it was a great place for you and the kids , you'd go and our mam and dad would let you go with their blessing ,

Started a new life in Turkey when I was 80.The UK is so different from the country I knew when I was younger.I had to get out of the EU--I was too politically incorrect.

Well done you , good life then ..........

We know there is trouble in every country and you have to be on your guard wherever you live , watch your house and bags when you go out  , be sensible , don't live with your holiday head all the time and trust only yourself .

Agreed.

Mr WB's mum is horrified that we want to move to Turkey, also citing the trouble on the Syrian border and all the crime.
We asked her if she'd advise people not to come to the UK because of the riots last year and she told us not to be silly..... We pointed out that all that happened a lot closer to our present home than what's gone on in Turkey.
We're effectively moving to the Turkish equivalent of Whitby!  ;D

Yes, there is crime and trouble and some people who aren't very nice....the same as you get everywhere. Nowhere is perfect.
I agree with Menthol that your family will be worried for you, but at the end of the day you have to do what you believe is right for you and reassure them as best you can.

I'm all for living life. One of the things that made our decision was attending the funeral of a business contact who was diagnosed with cancer and died within a year. He was 63 and looking forward to retirement with his second wife, a lovely lady who is the same age as him.

His widow said she felt cheated. That they'd worked their backsides off all their lives and were just starting to wind down and prepare for retirement, planning all the things they'd always been too busy to do. Now, it won't happen.

Carpe diem, I say. If you know what you want and it's within your power to do it, make it happen.
well said , but oh god that poor woman robbed of her dreams and losing her lovely husband so young , Not ever getting their new life off . Nice reading
