I don't have many friends so I was so excited to get an e mail from CBF that I responded immediately without reading the guidance - which on reflection could not have been more clearly explained.

Not by replying to the email notification. The email notification is from CALIS BEACH FORUM telling you that you have a message, if you reply to the email you are replying to CALIS BEACH FORUM, not the person who sent you a message.

Reply to them in MY MESSAGES (in the blue bar above).

Easy solution, stop the system sending out notifications...then everyone can moan they don't get any PM's!
