Pork Chops in Çaliş
« on: April 03, 2014, 18:49:58 PM »
Can anyone tell me if the current pork chops are from a pig or a boar?.  This is the only country I have been to that has had this coloured chops.
All 3 pork shops have got the same red chops

We have been here over 3 years now and we have always been told that they are not allowed to hunt them (except with a special licence ) . Or sell the meat legally ... And if a place is serving it on their menu it is always kept pretty quiet...

Yes, and I have heard from someone who lives in Fethiye that a lot of the steak that the Brits crave and cannot live without for two weeks is actually wild boar, apparently, it's delicious and the Brits cannot tell the difference.

Why not?  it's all meat, so what is the difference... I did not quote as our leader does not like it when it's the next answer..

If they can't tell the difference between beefsteak and boar, then they don't deserve to be eating meat.  ;)

They are distinctly different and have to be treated entirely differently when being cooked. Even the raw meats have a different smell and texture to them.

Whilst boar can taste delicious you must bear in mind that they are scavengers and as well as eating acorns, fruits and berrries etc, they'll also eat carrion and any sh1te that they can get hold of. Personally I've never been a great fan but our dogs loved it.

I would be very surprised if wild boar, called ay inek - moon cow to avoid any potential connotation to pig    ;) so Turkish people can enjoy eating it too, is sold as steak.

I have only eaten it once and found it disgusting (although I am sure it was probably just the way it had been cooked) but have been assured it is most delicious. What we were served could never been mistaken for steak.

I am sure there are people who can confirm otherwise  :D

I didn't find it disgusting but can agree I'd be in awe of the chef who can pass it off as steak and get away with it :o
