Tommy Cooper

David Threlfall gave an amazing portrayal of Tommy Cooper but I ended up not really liking Tommy as a person., He will get a best actor award for this surely.

I hadn't appreciated what a good actor he is - excellent job

I never did like TC as a comic - didn't find him amusing - just frustrating.

Many years ago I worked at Enfield Football Club, which was attached to a cabaret venue called The Starlight Rooms. Tommy Cooper was one of the regular entertainers and could fill the place every time.  However he was the most unreliable act ever.  He would turn up just before he was due to perform, nearly always off his head drunk.  He never turned up for the sound and lighting check before the public arrived for the show.  On one occasion the resident host had to carry on with his introduction for nearly an hour because Tommy Cooper was "delayed". I never saw him sober.

Saw him live at Batley Variety Club once. He was off the wall but very funny. Not seen the drama yet but have copied it.

My mum never laughed at him - ever. She just never got him at all.

Agree with you Mercury. Threlfall gave a wonderful performance, but I didn't know that TC was such a troubled soul.

In the '70's, Tommy Cooper was booked to appear at " La Fabrique ", a night club in Bo'ness West Lothian, where I used to live. I was invited to the show by a business associate, and when he eventually decided to make an appearance on stage, rat-arsed, he was very promptly booed by each and every member of the audience, who all demanded, and were given, their ticket money back. The man has never, ever been funny, in my opinion, in fact, to my mind he ranks alongside that other pair of useless, boring fools, Morecambe & Wise, who, for years, pulled the strings of each and every T.V. promoter involved in their shows.

It really makes me angry when he, and the other aforementioned pair, are referred to as "British Institutions " !!

Cant agree with you there..I think Morecame and Wise were great in their day... The Xmas show was always looked forward too... They were "of the moment" like a lot of other acts... I find very few of todays "comedians" funny.... Just heard that Miranda is going to host a re hash of Generation game... Give me strength.. I know lots of people who like Michael Mcintyre .. Why???   My auntie and Uncle saw Tommy Cooper at Batley Variety, they said he was brilliant. I never saw the attraction. Maybe an age thing.
