Race For Life (The Asian Leg)
« on: May 25, 2014, 16:55:23 PM »
Many will know that the massively popular annual 'Race for Life' is taking part across the UK next weekend, in fact on Sunday our daughter runs in the Stockport event. Chris thought it would be fun if she recreated the event here to show our daughter in law some support, I suggested that we should ask if others fancied joining in and despite an 07:30 start we are overwhelmed at the response. If anyone wishes to join us, we meet at 07:15 at Üçken Market on Baris Manco, it's the market next door to Et Pilic butchers shop on the right hand side as you head towards the seafront.

People will be making up their own numbers and writing memories of loved ones and maybe friends they have lost. It's a fun event, you can run, walk, bring the kids, dogs, you name it. We will have the course which is nice and flat marshalled so you can't go wrong. I reckon Asia deserves this event annually and if it proves to be popular, despite the start time then I've some plans in the early stages that will see a much bigger event in future years.

If you fancy helping out with some sponsorship then please visit

http://www.justgiving.com/dawnashton we will also have a representative from Kismet Bar with us should you wish to show support for the Soma Families. Anyway, we would love to see you there.

Would have joined in, even with me gammy leg, but won't be back in time.......I lost my dad to cancer.  For me, it's not that arduous to walk 5kms, basically on the flat, had good training on Kismet walks lol.

Could really do with some help. This seems to have caught peoples imagination and despite the early start time it seems we will be getting a fairly big turnout. Although the course is flat with the majority being along the seafront promenade, there are a couple of roads on the route and would love to post course marshals at a couple of points just as an added safety factor. If you feel you could help out then please get in touch.

Well done everyone who turned out this morning to run/walk/marshal or support on the first ever 'race For Life' here in Turkey. It was a great atmosphere and a massive well done to George Rimmer for organising it at such short notice. I am sure we are all looking forward to the 'official' 5k run next year. Lots of pics to appear soon me thinks. Lovely well earned breakfast for the Uzumlu contingent afterwards at the seahorse.

Well done Rimms, what a lot of effort you put in in such a short amount of time, I'm sure that with a lot more time to plan & with assistance promised by the Belediye next year will be attended by many more people, walkers, runners & marshals.

The course was well planned so that even an overweight, unfit old git like me who prefers driving to walking, was able to briskly walk the 5km in less than 45 minutes.

It was also a pleasure to meet you for the first time. 8)

Thanks all, it was a great and we were more than overwhelmed to find that more than fifty people turned up at around 07:00 this morning to support an event only dreamed up six nights ago. To my knowledge, there is nothing like the Race for Life in Turkey and when you think that just in our area of Fethiye, there are around 300 people walking around today who by this time next year will have been diagnosed with cancer, and if that wasn't bad enough, the Turkish health ministry (in their own words) say "unless something is done to prevent the increases seen in this disease, rates are likely to double within the next 15 years"

We are going to try and organise a big event in Fethiye next year, hopefully attracting Turkish people as the majority of entrants, if it works, we can build on that success and hopefully inspire this event throughout the country.

One thing however we won't forget, is that today we planted the acorn here in Calis and if one day this becomes even a fraction as big as it has grown to be in the UK, everyone who entered today should feel, very, very proud of themselves.
