Travel money
« on: June 03, 2014, 16:18:50 PM »
Heading out to Calis next month and starting to think about the best way to take money.
Do i take a load of sterling to exchange or use my bank card at the ATM's?
Any advise will be most appreciated.

Thanks

It depends on whether your bank charge you to draw cash abroad. You may be charged to draw Turkish Lira but not to draw sterling. Check with your bank. You can get sterling from several ATM's in the Fethiye/Çalış area then change it here.

We Have a Nationwide Flex account.. A lot of people set this account up a few years ago... No charge for drawing sterling out of a machine in Turkey.. You can then change up to Lira at a better rate than in Then UK.

I use a CAXTON fx Global Traveller card. Load it with what you think you will need when here - draw it out in sterling at HSBC as you need it and  change to Lira at Cash Exchange - no charge.  If needed you can top up on line. If card is lost or stolen they can only get what is on the card and no messing about having to stop other bank cards. Can also be used as a Visa card.

The best way  to convert £ to TRY is to use a Halifax Clarity Credit card, because you get a "perfect" exchange rate - far better than exchanging at a bank or in a shop.

I also use it to withdraw cash from ATMs. However, be aware that interest starts to accrue immediately on cash withdrawals. I counter that by using  my mobile banking app on my smartphone to transfer enough to cover the cash withdrawals a day or two after. I typically accrue interest of about £1 over a 2 week holiday so no biggie.
