Having had a husband who was in a wheelchair for 5 years.. Think yourselves lucky!!!!!    The ignorant people we came across when we were out and about makes my blood boil!  I could give you countless examples of how badly Barrie and I have been treated by the able bodied . We have never asked for preferential treatment but a bit of understanding wouldn't go amiss.. It is bad enough getting through the airport as a normal passenger these days without being in a wheelchair.. I can lend you ours if you want to try it? Sorry but this really upset me.

Colin T was talking about queue jumping at the bar and H about passport control -
I agree some people can be very inconsiderate to wheelchair users but why is it necessary to be first in these instances?   Some wheelchair users can also be selfish.

We were on a flight to Dalaman a few days ago 2 men in wheelchairs went on first and got seated at the front, which is normal procedure, a daughter of one of the men was sat near the back (did not want to pay to book a seat). When the plane landed she pushed everyone out of the way very rude, saying my father is disabled and needs help getting off. He then got off and walked to passport control. Normal procedure is for disabled people to stay on the plane and wait till it is empty, even the staff were embarrassed.

I saw a similar thing going through security, the next time I saw them was running around duty free, loaded with drinks and tobacco, out of order, and spoils it for the genuine ones,

I do think the wheelchair use at airports is abused - which is a shame for the genuine wheel chair users.  When checking in at Malaga a few years back they used our queue for all the wheelchair users and their families, as and when they arrived, it meant that we stood in the queue for almost an hour and only just got our flight, our seat numbers had already been called out when we got there.  To make matters worse, one lady who was in a wheelchair, was in our disco every night dancing away !

Likewise, it is amazing that going out to Malaga last March, about 8 wheel chair users were taken on the plane first - quite understandably - but when we landed the stewardess asked all those people needing assistance to stay in their seats whilst the other passengers disembarked - by the time we got off there were only two left - the others had suddenly decided that they could walk and got off first !

It is not surprising therefore that some wheelchair users get a bit of a cynical look - it is a shame for the genuine people who do need and appreciate this assistance.

I think it's perfectly fair that bonafide wheelchair users get the help required, it's the family's with children that think they've some god given right to walk straight to the front of the queue that gets my goat!
