Water Taxi experience

Coming back from Fethiye last night - we thought it took a while to reverse out but never took a lot of notice really - until we became grounded on the sand bank near the canal entrance.  Not once, not twice but three times!!  I was scared witless at the thought of abandoning ship.  Engines revving til the smell of burning etc. Didn't realise how dark it was out there.  To add to it, when we did finally get on the canal we weaved from left to right all the way.

That was one scary ride.     Anyone else ever been stuck out there?

Yes but ours happened in the daytime so we could see all the mud and silt being churned up .Stuck for about 45 minutes until eventually a team of men arrived to haul us off the sandbank. Also happened to friends while a storm was raging and they said it was the  most scary thing they had encountered . Nicer story though  was when  we were returning from Fethiye a little girl of about 5 was looking over the side and her pretty sunhat blew off into the sea. We all laughed  then after about five minutes she suddenly burst into tears as it was her new hat. The boat then turned round and went to search for it.The Captain found it and  managed to fish it out of the water to huge applause and cheers. That was a happy boat load of people that arrived in Calis.

Our neighbour in Calis was on the water taxi and it broken down in the middle of the journey.  The skipper jumped overboard and went under the boat.  Apparently the propellor was fowled up and after a while the skipper took some stuff from around the propellor and came onboard and restarted the boat and they continued on...

Hubblebubbles, I 'liked' the post - not because if the terrifying grounding etc but because of the lovely and (only in Turkey) gesture of going back for the little girls new hat! Awww!!

Last year coming into the canal the boat got stuck, the skipper then  asked all the fat  people ( his words ) to move to the
front, it worked !!

12 of us on a boat trip sunday,we had to all move to the front of the boat as it approached the canal entrance so it did not get stuck.When we asked why this is a problem this year as we have done the trips many times over the years and never been asked to do this .The captain said that a lot of silt had built up during the winter and all the canal changes disturbed lots of mud which flowed down to the mouth of the canal and it had not been dredged. At this rate you will be able to walk across the canal to the sat.

Yeah, we got stuck just before the canal entrance in June.
No probs, you can walk it from there - its only thigh deep !!!

I was already at the front - didn't help this time!

It is scary though, even though you know it's very shallow, I have no desire to abandon ship.  Ours was a lady (Captain??) in training, and when they eventually got it free she got a big round of applause. She was very embarrassed, I think it was her husband doing the training and he thought it was very funny.
