The Health Minister has, within the last few minutes, just made a statement saying that, due to systematic physical & mental abuse/ deaths of elderly people , Care Homes , under a new Act, will be given 6 months to either "shape up, or be closed down ", BUT this Act will NOT come into force until April of 2015, to my calculation, this would seem to suggest that " Care Homes " ( & I used the term VERY loosely ), will have between now and OCTOBER of next year to continue to treat our elderly relatives like punch-bags, refuse to change soiled bedding. leave alarm bells out of reach, & ignore these bells when rang !!
Surely legislation like this MUST be applied IMMEDIATELY ??

I sincerely hope that no one tells me that I have posted this in the " wrong place ", as I believe this should be posted wherever the largest number of people will see it !!

I think that there is a real fear in Britain that you may finish up in a care home and is it any wonder..??

This act will make no difference at all. All care settings already should be working within the National Minimum Standards and be following  guidelines of the CQC who regularly inspect care homes.
In my opinion the new act will make no difference at all to vulnerable adults The government have gradually reduced the funding for training staff so people  are being employed with little or no skills and given zero contracts.... how can we expect the standard of care to improve. >:( :(

This is indeed a terrible situation and such a damning indication of care homes and care of the elderly in the UK.  Overall, the word 'care' should be removed from the UK dictionary because we are no longer a caring society.  Very few people care about anything, unlike some migrants and people from other countries who, as part of their culture, take care of and nurture their elderly relatives, children and family.  The situation is made worse for all the people who DO genuinely care because their efforts are being dragged down because of the 'uncaring' lot.

Having managed a care service these things are occurring because amounts being paid for services have been cut to the bone by social services .They want quality services on a shoe string.
This affects staffing levels and the ones left are stressed, tired, over worked and paid peanuts as services can't afford pay rises out of the pittance they receive to run services.
Managers are so busy evidencing their roles and doing risk assessments, preparing for inspections etc etc they rarely get on the shop floor to see what's really going on.
When cut backs started I told them point blank our hourly rate would remain the same & if they wanted rubbish services to go elsewhere.
Well paid appreciated staff stay, staff supported with good quality training and working conditions with the correct staffing levels stay.
There's never an excuse for abuse but it was obvious what was going to happen.
I'm so glad to be out if it, I refused to run a poor potentially abusive service.
Its just dreadfully sad.

Kayakebab ...Like you been there and got the T shirt .... All the government are doing is trying to pull the wool over our eyes by introducing new legislation that counts for nothing .
