Kanal work restarts (pics)
« on: July 20, 2014, 16:22:29 PM »
The kanal work has restarted again in the last couple of days.  Restricted, at the moment?, to two activities.  The first is concreting out the bottom of the kanal that runs down past the Pelin Hotel.  They have started the work at the road bridge upstream from the Pelin, why I do not know as the other side of the bridge has not been started yet?

Wrought iron fencing is being placed on top of the kanal walls.  Not sure if this is being restricted just to the area around Calis seafront or whether the fencing will be placed on the wall further upstream.  Time will tell.  Not sure about priorities of this work, because for my money they are better off putting the effort into rebuilding the roads, which are in a terrible mess all along both kanals.

Still no sign yet of what they are going to do with the 'lower' level walls, hanging gardens of Babylon may be the plan after they filled it with earth, but at the moment it looks a mess as it is full of weeds.

The pictures below show the new fencing being constructed near to the Mutlu Hotel, running between the footbridge by the reeds back to the Calis Front Bridge.

Finally, for some reason they are displaying a Ferguson tractor outside Kipa in Calis.  Why I do not know?  It is British made and that's about as far as I can go, but below for your edification is a picture of the said tractor.  If you know why they are showing it, then please let me know.

Perhaps it is a nod to the Scottish referendum Ferguson being a Scottish name and all ( I think )  :)

It is starting to look really good - just hope they tidy up the area beside the canal at the back of the prom as this had been left in a total mess in June when we were over.

Are there any plans to have traditional canal features, like water?

My views all along. All that concrete and only a little ditch in the middle. I know that it used to run over the upside Down Bridge, but I am at a loss as to where enough water is going to come from to fill the ravine.

Or indeed where the water that used to flow over the top of the upside down bridge is now? Surely those huge volumes don't all fit in the little trickle at the side...

This is a bloody environmental disaster on every level. First of all once the canal had been widened and natural flooding restrictions, like the old "upside down" bridge had been removed, the risk of flooding had also been averted. Secondly, the miles and miles of concrete will be more visible from google earth than the Great Wall of china once they do their next pass over, it's a total disgrace.

The wildlife along the canal has been decimated.

Duck Island should be renamed, duck less island.

The bay has never been more full of water borne scum and floating debris (IMO) and so, mission accomplished

Good luck with attracting cruise ships Fethiye, maybe start with Hong Kong's Star Ferries?
