Refugees on the border
« on: September 27, 2014, 15:13:22 PM »
I am sure everyone is aware of the situation with the refugees and the fact that they have arrived in this country with nothing . Duran and his wife from the Desperado ranch at Yaniklar in conjunction with Fetav are organising to collect any winter clothing  Blankets Fleece  baby napkins baby food   indeed anything at all that will be useful to help these people. It would be wonderful if for one month instead of giving to the local charities (including us of course) it was  donated to this worthy cause it would help these people enormously. Perhaps a couple of friends could club together to buy a blanket or a couple of yards of fleece. This is available in lots of the material shops in Fethiye and is so warm and washes/dries so easily plus its available in darker colours so would be ideal to help keep them warm . Fedan from the Bambu Restaurant  on the seafront  has kindly offered to be the drop off point as she has plenty of space to store until a lorry load can be made up and delivered.  Please Please  try to help and take any unwanted items to the Bambu at any time. Any warm winter clothing is most acceptable providing it is clean .  Thank you in advance and hopefully soon I will be asking for volunteers to help me box it all up .!!!!! There will be arrangements made for cash donations but I am not sure what they are yet .

I would like to help. I,m afraid I don't know which refugees you are referring to though. Every time I look at the news there seems to some on one side of Syrian border with tanks pointing at them, some that have escaped from Syria. I would like to learn more about the refugees you are helping and also to find out what I can donate to them. Are they particularly in need of women's,kids, men's clothing, shoes?
Where are they situated now and in what sort of accommodation are they living I know you mentioned blankets and fleece stuff, but if there is anything else they would find useful I will be happy to help and also ask around.
Sorry for all the questions, and Good luck with collecting whatever is needed. Bernie x

I would definitely like to help with this cause.

I'd be happy to be a drop off point for donated goods in the Ovacik/Hisaronu/Kayakoy area. I live in Ovacik.

I can then bring over donated items to Calis and drop them into Bambu or elsewhere as required.

Just imagine waking up one day and throwing open your curtains to see hostile 'soldiers' on your street pointing guns at you and telling you to get out or die. You then grab your family and anything you can manage to carry and start walking. In that blind panic and despair, all you have left is the faint hope that someone will pity you enough to want to help you.

Bernie to answer some of your queries. Duran and his wife Christine have friends in a church in a place called DIYARBAKIR  They have reported to him that in the last two days a further 5000 refugees have crossed to safety and the total is now about 100,000 They are in desperate need of tents warm clothing shoes blankets and baby items such as nappies and dry and tinned foods plus of course warm  clothing. Winter has already arrived there so their need is urgent . Duran himself will travel with the first convoy of donations and will help his friends from the church to distribute to the people so they can be sure the help is getting to where it is really necessary. If you or your friends can help in any way it would be fantastic.

Well done Mum,  can i make some suggestions -

the zantara facebook suggests these as most urgent

Clothes and shoes for all ages (winter clothes in particular)
-- Blankets, cushions, beds, bedsheets, towels, carpets and rugs
-- Non-perishable foods (tinned food, grains, beans, etc.)
-- Baby food, baby nappies, and sanitary pads
-- Toys and stationery for kids
-- Drugs and medicine (painkillers, antibiotics, ointments)

over half the refugees are children, i read a report on a Jordanian camp where the boys were playing with make believe footballs - maybe a few balls might also provide a few moments of normality and forgetfullness of what they have been through.

Fleece is both cheap, easy to dry and warm - maybe any funds donated could be used to purchase rolls wholesale and cut into lengths for bedding which would also double as warm wraps of an evening.

Many arrive with injuries, so i suspect basic medical stuff like bandages, plasters, antiseptic and painkillers (adult and infant) would be needed

soap, shampoo and towels would also be useful.

Can i just make the point that it helps eveyone if any 'used' clothing donations are freshly laundered.

I will bring as much as i can over next week, i am sure the 1st lorry will be filled in no time at all.

If anyone wants to donate from the UK - money rather than supplies - I'd be happy to accept donations on behalf of Embrace via the usual CBF/me Paypal account - make payment to email address (without the spaces of course) keith @ calis-beach.co.uk and I'll take them over.

If this little appeal for Paypal payments reaches £50 it will allow a lot of things to be bought locally - and if this post generates £50, I'll stick in £50 - how's that  :)
