Flood in Fethiye
« on: November 20, 2014, 12:03:53 PM »
This lunchtimes massive storm has resulted in bad flooding in central Fethiye and surrounding areas. The water in the streets around Citlembik dept store  are knee deep in water so it looks as though the new storm drains have been unable to cope with the volume of  the downpour. Although the thunder and lightening now seems to have stopped  it is still raining. There are lots of pics on Facebook. I feel sorry for the businesses who will have suffered damage. There will be a big mop up operation once the water subsides.

Holidaymakers never think that places they visit during the summer months can be hit like this.  I have always found that in countries that enjoy blissful hot summers are the ones where, when it rains, the rain is unrelentless and comes down in sheets.  I hope everyone is safe and that the shops don't suffer too much.

We were in Fethiye during the storm, the rain plus the very very loud thunder, would have shocked Noah.  Getting out of town was bad, with broken down cars blocking the way, Turks continuing to drive through the floods as they would normally didn't help either.  You can tell the roads - and even the sides of a roads - with drains in and those without.  The canals running down into the creek at Calis didn't look too bad, in terms of water levels, so the walls and concreting the base probably works in clearing the water away, although it is fair to say that the water levels in Calis creek did look high!

Apparently one of the new pumps in Fethiye failed some time ago and they "forgot" to repair it.

So sorry to see Linda And Yakup Yilmaz having to fight the water getting into their shop as well, they are such a lovely couple and do so much to help others.
Hope they've managed to save anything important and get the shop back to normal soon.

Keep bailing Yakup.
