The ampitheatre in Fethiye
« on: February 18, 2015, 15:14:22 PM »
I went  to have a look at the "renovations" yesterday and I can honestly say I could have cried. Totally ruined in my honest opinion . All modern stone and they are trying recreate what it might have looked like when it was built To me they have totally destroyed a beautiful site which was steeped in atmosphere and history. It didn't matter how many times I visited the place it was always worth going and I suppose I can count myself lucky that I was able to see the ruins in their natural state before they modernised it. Very sad .

Turks don't do "sympathetic restoration".  Never have, never will.  Their ruins, their choice.

Not saying I agree, by the way...

Let's just hope that they never get their hands on the Ghost Village in Kaya.

I suppose there are quite a few amphitheatres in the area so perhaps renovating one for active use is not such a terrible idea - as long as they don't do them all.

I visited the site, in May last year and thought  they were installing more new stone than old which defeats the object of restoration. Inview of what you tell us, I reckon if they had the Acropolis, it would now be re-roofed ,glazed and a restaurant.

Actually not their ruins, and maybe that's the point, if you see what I mean.

I was in Pammukale back in the eighties and we were told that rock carvings and some stone had been there since biblical times.
on our return journey a crane was moving them from one side of the road to the other.
Only in turkey could this happen.lol

At last this desolate site has been cleared and renovated. And if it is going to be used for cultural events . I do not see a problem.
