Mosquitos
« on: June 12, 2015, 17:54:48 PM »
The council have been around twice in the last couple of weeks spraying.  I have heard a lot of people complaining about bites that are unusual and around the ankle with blisters.  I had one when we first arrived.  So touch wood, the mossies are now under control.

My local pharmacist said my blistered ankle bites were the work of 'fruit flies' and not mozzies.

But yes was good to see the mozzie wagon spraying again last night.

The problem with spraying against mosquitoes is that it also kills many other insects upon which we rely (e.g. for pollination) or which we like because they are pretty (e.g. butterflies). Where I am staying it is not allowed. Local conservationists claim most mosquitoes in the resort, which have a pretty narrow range of hatching requirements, are bred by people. They breed in swimming pools that have not been properly drained in the autumn, and in puddles in people's gardens formed in junk that hasn't been disposed of yet. Well, that's what they claim. Believe or not as you will.

Plus there's the fact that the ingredients in the spray are known to be carcinogenic.

The bites around the ankles are from black flies Jacqui. They look like normal house flies and they are usually around  under the tables at bars and restaurants both during the day and evening.  They usually get you anywhere below the knees and really can nip. Like you say they come up in really itchy blisters which you have to keep scratching. We usually use those mossie wipes you can pick up cheaply at the pound shops in UK to wipe around our ankles when we are out and there are signs of them.

Yes we got some of those wipes from Poundland.   It is just remembering to plaster the wipes around your ankles.
