Not a pleasant Turkish bath experience
« on: July 19, 2015, 22:48:07 PM »
We recently went to the Belcekiz Beach Hotel in Olu Deniz for a Turkish bath and I was sad to find that it was not  a particularly good experience.
We have visited quite a few Turkish baths over the years and they are usually very pleasant.
On this occasion we were picked up from our hotel, taken to the hotel and went into a sauna after changing into the cotton wrap. Usually you relax on the marble slab in the steam room. We were then put on to the marble slab for the wash along with other people and it was like being on a production line, and not particularly relaxing. After the wash down we were put into the reception room to await the massage and sat there, dripping wet whilst a group of people came in and were subjected to a hard sell for extra treatments which we had also experienced when we arrived. The man trying to sell the treatments made people feel quite uncomfortable if they did not agree to extra time for massages etc.
One man had a mole on his back and the top was scratched and bled but he was not even offered a tissue or plaster.
I would not go to this particular bath again and also thought it was overpriced. Not everyone paid the same price for the same treatments. There are much better Turkish baths better than this available although the girls who did the oil massages were very professional and pleasant. It was a very hard sell experience which I resent. I do not like to criticise businesses usually and in Turkey I have not had reason to but on this occasion I felt quite angry at the way people were being treated.

I am not surprised your angry, sounds totally unpleasant and annoying as you have had to pay for the pleasure (or not pleasure) >:(

I see that some Tripadvisor reviews describe the 16th century "old hamam" in Fethiye as "the oldest haman in Turkey". Which is curious since the splendid Vakiflar Hamam in Mugla was built in 1344 (or possibly 1258 depending on whether you believe the hamam itself or tourist guides).

It is true that the traditional hamams make the experience even more interesting. I had a look at the building in the Paspatur in Fethiye.  I enjoyed the Atapark in Karagozler  and my husband found the Lycian in Hisaronu very good when he hurt his back.. I would not like to think people thought this was a typical example of the way you would normally  be treated.

The Kaya Hamam on the Saniye is far less "touristy".
