I'm sure there's rplenty of charity work needs  needs doing.!!      ;)
I can assure you that there are plenty of good-hearted ex pats who contribute time, money and effort to doing just that, 12 months of the year!!

I'm sure most of us are well aware of the wonderful work done by the 3Cs and other charities in Calis/Fethiye to the benefit of the local people in the area.  There are also people who are not ex-pats who only holiday there for a few weeks a year who would love to help in such a way if they could.  Alternatively, we try and support the fundraising efforts to raise much needed cash to support the charities.  To the best of my knowledge, most of these fundraisers would not exist without Highlander putting in many hours of his own free time, outside his working hours, to dream up different ways to raise money for something which he feels passionately about, the underprivileged children of Fethiye.

Let's be grateful for them all!   :)

I was not for one moment decrying Highlander's efforts to raise money for 3C's and other charities.  I've seen on here how much he does and how much he is respected for the time and effort he puts in.  I have to apologise, including his quote in my remark was accidental.  I can see now that Kevin3's quote was accompanied by a 'smiley' so was meant tongue in cheek.
Nevertheless, there are a lot of unsung heroes (and heroines) doing what they can to raise money for all the charities during the winter months when tourist donations are not there to swell the coffers.
I do apologise if my first remark caused offence.

I'm sure no apology is needed CleopatrasAsp, you were rightly defending all the volunteers who work hard throughout the year for the local charities just as I felt I had to defend others who can only do their bit by supporting the magnificent fundraising efforts of Highlander.  So really we are on the same side   :)

Not sure how this topic got into charity but hey ho!!  Jacqui I knew you would be aware of the building work, which is why I felt I could make light of the situation.  Although bad as it may be, it is going to happen at sometime, possibly this winter.

As to the poor farmer using the land ... come on it has been used as a dumping ground for various items of rubbish and 'recyclables' for years, and the nearest I have seen it used for farming is the two goats that get tethered there.  He never owned it, rented it or otherwise he simply used the land next to his home, and there are doubts whether he has got the ownership of that land!!  And we all might say good luck to him, but let's not build him up as some sort of a Grundy family (from the Archers for those of you who don't know!)disposed of his land.

Now can I take my tin hat off??

Not a dumping ground, they collected bottles etc., and put them in one corner and then got the money for them, just to make up their income.   The council rebuild their house when it burnt down a few years ago.  The small piece of land it and the chicken are on does belong to them. (which may cause a problem to the new build)  There were 6 goats on our last visit. This number was depleted after Bayram.  I have been told that goats are more valuable than sheep.  The couple have now been left on their own since the marriage of, first their son and now their daughter.  They used to have an earth closet outside to use as toilet, not too sure if they ever had that replaced by the council though.
They did rent the land and we have seen many crops being grown over the years, also been given some of the products too.   I think as time went on and their family left, they got older they stopped planting crops and used the land for grazing the goats, but it must be a shock to them to be told they cannot rent the land anymore.
We are wondering what they will do now as they still have their small piece of land and their house,  so i hope they stay with their chickens and a few goats.
