Taking rug back to UK
« on: October 12, 2016, 16:22:22 PM »
Hi all,

We are thinking of taking a rug back to UK, none of the shops we have found in Fethiye will send it back for us, we only come with hand luggage so obviously wont fit in there! Does anyone know how we deal with it at airport and what the costs would be for getting it back with us?

We've brought a few back over the years - usually the shops have nylon bags specifically designed for rugs, they pack it in and off you toddle.  If you're hand luggage only then I suspect you'll have to book a hold bag.  Whoever you're flying with will have the costs on their web site.

I don't think any receipt we ever got had more than fifty quid on it.  Never had a problem with customs but there is the potential for VAT & import duty, the exact figure being dependent upon the value they put on it.

Thanks John, easyjet website does say, any  extra luggage is at a cost of £10 per kilo not booked in, so i think we will have to find out the weight of the rug first, which might be difficult, my Turkish is not that great!

Better to buy one in the U.K.  They are very much cheaper at Auctions in the U.K than in shops in Turkey.  Also in the U.K. Auctions they will give you a full receipt of authenticity, date, place of manufacture etc.,  I knew a guy that sold Carpets at Anitque Fairs  and I asked him did he import any, he told me he would not do that, but always bought in the U.K as they did not cost as much.

Thats when the little guys with the scales would have been handy.

Alternatively, just say "ağırlık" (Pro: aahrlick) with a questioning look and get him to write it down.

If it is any help - we have a rather thick woolen carpet (not Turkish) that measures 6ft x 4ft. I've just weighed it at 5.5.kilo.

Did you use a set of scales or just give it the Celtic eye, as in "aye, that's about 5.5kg..."

Thx Colwyn, the guy in the shop did say he thought it was 6kg but did not seem enough to us, but probably right then.

Thx for your inout Jacquii but this rug is certainly better quality and cheaper than we have found in the UK

Whatever you do, don't let them pack it for you in the shop. That's when the switch happens.

I used our luggage-weighing thingy. The "Celtic eye" is a myth. Allegedly.
