Hi,
I am hoping to retire to Turkey this year ( sale of house permitting) and am trying to get as much info as possible about various locations. Would welcome any constructive info about Calis and area.

Have you been to Turkey Dave and if so where have you visited?  It is a bit hard to tell you about Calis, it is not the place I thought I would have chosen but it depends on what you are looking for. We are also planning to retire out there this year (subject to house sale) and we have an older property with a garden and 5 minutes from the beach. We are at the quieter Koca Calis end of the beach (which is gradually getting busier). Front is all sea and behind is all mountains.

Beach is long and shingle the town is small with little in the way of normal shops and is busy in the summer and quiet in the winter. Fethiye is a working town and not a tourist town and that is what attracts us to Calis as a retirement place.

Generally found it to be full of nice folk, nice to stroll along the prom or the beach and lovely sunsets if that is your thing. Beautiful cooling breeze in the summer at about 3pm which becomes a freezing wind when it is cold (we are fickle folk).

Not much in the way of nightclubs, but nice bars and restaurants. If you want more life then Hisaronu is a short ride from Fethiye.

Hi Dave & welcome to the forum, Calis is fairly small, can be lively or can be quiet, depends where you want to go. Hisaronu is lively but 10mins walk away is Ovacik which was a lot quieter when i was there. I don't care if it's lively at night, i love my place in the centre of Calis, when i'm tired i'll sleep anywhere, even in my living room, the scarlett bar. lol. Alan

Many thanks for your reply. We have been to Dalyan and Koycegiz, both of which we loved. We were told that Calis doesn't "shut down" in the Winter and that there are many British residents there. We did drive to Calis and liked the views and the canal. The trouble with Turkey is that there are so many lovely spots to choose from and it's going to be difficult to make our mind up!!

Answering your question is a bit like choosing a suit for someone you don't know. Teresa is right in much of what she says but I think Calis/Fethiye are like bacon and eggs or perhaps more accurately like strawberry and cream. They go together and each enhances the other. It is not often you find this balance in such a small area and in such a contrasting but complimentary way. Accomodation in Calis is more likely to find you a garden and a pool. Less people there; so a real chnce of making friends. Fethiye provides the option to easily venture into what is a lovely, interesting, slightly romantic town with a distinctive and mild hustle and bustle that will serve many needs. It is place where you can people watch as well as fit into its  tapestry and sense of being a community. This combination provides you with seascapes and distant moutain views which are sometines snow capped in the winter. It definately worth your serious consideration!

I also loved Dalyan Dave and we had been going there for a few years on holiday and we have been to Koycegiz.  However when we looked to settle rather than a holiday home Dalyan seemed a bit "out on a limb" for us, but I still think it is a lovely area.  However we do not plan to run a car and that could have a big influence on decision making as well.

You are right though there are many lovely places to choose from so good luck.

Reading these posts I think I would want to live here if I didn't already do so. Fethiye is perfect for us as a permenant home all year round and so easy to access all the surrounding places mentioned.  We do not have a single regret about moving here.

hi dave and welcome why don`t you visit calis or thereabouts so you get a feel of the area.we have a place in catalarik which is central for getting to all the resorts,and nice and quite when you just want to chill out,good luck in your search
