Without sounding to worried, there is lots of unrest at the moment in Turkey, should we be concerned about travelling to chalis at the end of the month, ?
-
Well I go out on Saturday,I am not in the least bit worried, would not go to Ankara or Istanbul, but Calis no problems.
-
No problems in this area at all. Just avoid Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara at the moment.
-
If I were returning to Istanbul this weekend I wouldn't be concerned.
I would just avoid the Taksim area, which I'm not keen on anyway.
(Might as well be on Oxford Street)
-
P.S. I bet they are still fishing off the Galata Bridge ;D ;D ;D
-
It's interesting though, that will be a question for many , particularly people going for the first time. Someone at work who has been twice to fethiye said today that they wouldn't be going given the situation! Yet another hit for tourism and as a consequence for the working man!
-
Well we will be going to Calis :(
-
Good for you Mr H,it isn't safe in our own country to walk about.
-
Well we will be going to Calis :(
Oops H, apologies for the error, i have every Intention of going but if every one started jumping up and down telling me not to go because it's unsafe then I would need to reconsider, but as it stands we will be seeing CALIS at the end of June, a day can't wait:0' ;)

Well, I'm leaving in the morning for the long trek back to UKistan but I'd much rather be staying here despite the 'problems'. :-\
-
Some shop keepers/householders banging pots, pans and tim cans just now on BMB. Driver said they were protesting locally otherwise nothing noticeable here.
-
Herringbone block paving seems to make limitless ammo for the rioters though.
(Just keep removing them as you retreat) Wouldn't fancy being a cop out there :(
But I'm sure plenty of people continued to visit London when the Croydon and Tottenham
riots occurred - like Istanbul its a big big place.
-
I found some interesting photo's so I hope this link works . It does show ordinary people clearing up after the demonstrations showing they really do care about their country .

That was wonderful to see and exactly the sort of behaviour that will gain even more support -
-
I saw these photos earlier, they made me very emotional. Such generosity and spirit.
I'm no football fan, but those pictures really touched me. and the sign offering their home to protesters.
Amazing

Have a wonderful holiday - I am sure it will be trouble free :)

The Turkish - the only nation who 'riot' and tidy up afterwards.
Amazing.
-
It was amazing - I just love the photo of the little girl with her small plastic shovel :)

Thanks H, we have never had a bad holiday in Calis, we love the hospitality and culture and dream of a modest little retirement place there one day I hope the protests are not in vain and the situation calms, looking at the photos shows what a passionate nation Turkey is.
Have a wonderful holiday - I am sure it will be trouble free :)

Heartwarming to see young and old standing shoulder to shoulder.

Amazing.
Will this practise one day extend to the picnic? :-\ :)
-
Small protest in Fethiye last night all peaceful and good natured.
Several people went to watch
We still carried on eating our meal though!!!
-
Riots ? Rioting ? ... sorry I disagree.. its the wrong word here... `protests` thats the right word.... `riots`and `rioting` `looting` etc were what those yobbo`s were doing in london and major cities in the UK last summer when our police force `pussy footed` with the handling of it.
-
Big difference !!
-
Agree 100 % :) :)
-
I would go to Calis tomorrow if I had a flight booked ;D
will have to wait until September.
-
We are off to calis on Thursday, I don't have any worries about being there at all. The people we know and love who live there, are looking forward to our arrival. As has already been said, Turkey is a big place, and the people we know haven't suddenly turned into rioters, and looters!! Not more than 20 miles away from where I live there have been 10 stabbings recently, but it doesn't mean my quiet town is in any danger.
-
Won't worry me at all. It's a bit like saying, would I cancel my holiday in Cornwall if there were riots in Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester!
-
I travelled to Dalaman with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul literally a couple of days after the 2003 bombings. It wasn't the busiest flight I'd ever been on. In Calis life was no different - with the exception of people coming up to me to apologise for the events of a few days earlier.
-

-
A token turn out in Fethiye's new square.
-
Things are going from bad to worse - the BBC have sent Jeremy Bowen to report on the situation.
Let's hope we don't see Kate Adie anytime soon. ;)
-
These pictures show that my last flippant post wasn't clever in the slightest.

You made a valid point actually, Highlander. Who knows how this will develop over the next period of time?
However, like many of us Turkophiles, possibly, I am optimistic, for various reasons. Nuff said.
