Title: Like button

Is it just me or is anybody else finding the big red like buttons distracting when you are trying to read a post?

No, it's not just you.  I don't like it either.

Miserable bu@@ers  :)

It doesn't help that it is not working. http://www.calis-beach.co.uk/forum/topicseen./suggest_improvements_calis_beach_forums/member_and_post_functionality_54778.0.html

We can make the button less intrusive when/if we fix it

How could you be bothered by a tiny red like button?
Title: Re: Like button
Post by: echogirl1 on April 09, 2014, 00:41:44 AM
I'm not bothered by the tiny red button, but I would like to know if by pressing it that it is acknowledged in some way that I have liked it (if you know what I mean).

Funny it doesn't show  on my phone at all but looks enormous on my tablet. I haven't been on the computer recently so don't know about that. I didn't say I didn't like it, but just find it distracting, maybe its down to the medium you are viewing it through? Hope you get it sorted soon   :)

i didnt know what all the fuss was about as i mostly use tapatalk so now I realise it doesnt show on there at all! Now on a PC it does- I like it and when it is sorted I'll defo use it. I often like something someone says but dont feel the need to comment- would be inclined to hit like though!

I would imagine its all down to money and put there for a reason. The reason being to get you to click on it to generate more money for the advertiser in some other way or another. Its the same with all the annoying adverts. It seem you cannot go on many sites these days and you are hit by them. Many are to do with these social media sites. They should all be banned.

What on Earth are you talking about? You seem to have no idea about it at all. The like button, when clicked, will let the person who's post you liked, know that you liked it. No money, no advertisers.

Perhaps you can then choose between (a) paying for membership and the advice and information you receive for nothing at present or (b) that I should pay for the hosting costs (which run into hundreds of pounds a year) out of my own pocket so I can provide somewhere for ungrateful sods like you to come without charge or request for payment and spout ill informed crap.

Yes I'm annoyed - the adverts save me losing money year after year (if people click on them, there's no obligation to) - if you can't stand the adverts p1ss off somewhere else!!!
Title: Re: Like button
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on April 09, 2014, 17:24:20 PM
I know the adverts help to pay for this website and I have to say I do click into them to help pay the costs as over the last 9 years this Forum has been invaluable to me and I am extremely grateful it's here.  I can honesty say i don't know what i would do without it for all my Calis/Fethiye information.   So thanks Keith... now calm down most of us are very fond of you and don't want to see you upset. ;D   ;)
On the subject of the Like button.  I see "like" in red at the bottom of postings, but I have no idea how to add it, as I am using my ipad and it does not seem to bring up a like button?? :-[

Ok so I'm wrong and there is no money involved, But why on earth would anyone on this site need to know whether or not if their post is liked or not. Cannot see the point myself. That's my opinion. Thats if I'm allowed to have one without being told to wee off. Nice attitude to have with members.
Of course I appreciate that you need to cover your costs and advertising is a part of that. but I myself do not like them and never will. If it meant paying to be a member of the forum it would not worry me one bit. Again just my opinion.I did not intend to annoy you Scunner so if I did I'm sorry.
Title: Re: Like button
Post by: Steve (redding43) on April 09, 2014, 18:44:46 PM
I like the 'like' button as it is always good for use in debate and also when people are throwing in ideas

As for paying to be a member, I suspect that most would put up with the odd annoying advert, and to be honest I have seen far more annoying intrusions by advertising online, rather than pay.

I have no proof other that my numerous years in eCommerce but in my opinion charging people to be a member will reduce numbers which in turn reduces comments which in turn reduces numbers which in turn....you get my point
Title: Re: Like button

Nice attitude to have with members.

Only members who think free still isn't cheap enough. If you'd put as many hours into running this site over TEN YEARS and doing your best helping members with their Calis related situations, you'd understand. As it is, your only worry in life is having adverts to ignore.

Gosh!!!  Don't know where all that came from, a real swerve in topic. I certainly didn't mean to stir up a storm. I was only commenting that I found the new button distracting as it was a bit big.

Can someone please tell me what happens if I click the " like" button. Where does my click go? How is it registered? Who can see how many "likes" each topic is getting. My clever wife tells me I am so "dumb" when it comes to things like this and she's maybe right. But Iam trying to learn   :)
Title: Re: Like button
Post by: swindsor on April 10, 2014, 09:09:48 AM
Personally I like the "Like" button.  There's many a time when I think what someone has posted is really helpful and I would like to acknowledge it somehow - without the need for a post stating "Thank you" or "I agree" or such like.  There's also many a time when I think "Wow, what a comeback!" and I also like that.  I am not much of a poster but I do love to check in and have a read at the posts everyone else has taken the time to write.  I'll definitely use the "Like" button and think it's a great addition to the forum.

To those who mainly got thumbs down Des! Can't recall who that was now....  :)

Partly why there are no plans for a dislike button. Nothing to do with CBF or forums, just the negative traits of people when they can judge others while remaining anonymous. Not nice,

It's a device to allow gangs of chums to roam about supporting each other whenever they post - a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest, or people shouting "Rah! Rah!" and "Hear! Hear!". We're doomed, Captain Mainwaring, doomed!

Title: Re: Like button
Post by: Scunner on April 10, 2014, 17:06:29 PM
It is not the intention to become more like Facebook I can assure you Des. A lot of good info is shared on CBF (unlike FB) and we have been looking for a way that members can show appreciation for a tip, piece of info, joke etc without having to post.

I agree the thumbs down was a disaster - I got quite a few and you wonder what you have to do or how much of your life you have to give to stop people being such a negative, born to take and give nothing bunch of anonymous cyberbullying heroes. People who meet you in real life and wouldn't say boo to a goose. Although in truth doing that is largely pointless.

So if  20 members out of 100 members that made a reply or veiwed the post clicked the like button it would that mean the other 80 probably didn't like it maybe. I am getting to understand it now I think.

Title: Re: Like button

No it doesn't mean 80 didn't like it, it means that they didn't click 'Like'. Similar to when I like a programme on TV but don't write to the BBC to say so. To you I guess that means I didn't like it.

Just for you, here is a glass Dave, half empty.

Title: Re: Like button

Because you can't "Like" yourself*; only other people. The CBF hierarchy have set their faces firmly against narcissism which they regard as ideologically unsound and a degenerate social practice. (Very puritanical are the CBF administrators).

* Except for me as I am the subject of a vendetta by JohnF who has set the system to state that I "Like" any post that someone else "Likes" including my own. This is despite that fact that I "Dislike" everything. Including your post.

You are not the only one. There are quite a few. Indeed, a lot. In fact, everyone. Nobody has a Like button under their own post. This is because CBF Administrators are opposed on sexist, racist and ageist grounds to all other members of CBF. That's just the sort of people they are!

I've changed some code to move the Likes Notification (at the top of the page) pop up box into a more central position.

Let me know if I've moved it too far or any other issues.  I've tested it in the usual browsers but that's not always enough...

OK in Firefox but right side/off screen in Chrome.

P.S. I'd tell you about Comodo IceDragon but that won't let me enter CBF at all.

Thanks Colwyn.  As you've mentioned Comodo IceDragon I'm assuming you're using Windows - I've tested it with Chrome in Windows and it appeared fine, towards the right hand side of the screen but not "off screen".  Can you try doing a hard refresh, Ctrl + F5 and see if that makes a difference?

I'll try getting on CBF with my copy of CID and see what the issue is.

I did as instructed and it is now fully visible in Chrome.

Good!.

Out of interest, I'm posting this from CID.  Site comes up and log in as normal, no issues.

When I said that I was annoyed by the big like buttons. I was using my desktop which is winxp. I am now on my win 7 or 8 laptop which I rarely use and guess what? I cannot see any like or new buttons at all. On my win phone and on my tablet they are there but not on this laptop. Im not complaining as its great to be rid of them just wondered why they are not visible. Strange isn't it..

Forget what I just posted because  after a reboot the bloody things have just appeared. I must be jinxed.  :)

Oh well, never mind - its nice to know you appreciate the time and effort folks put in to improving the user experience on CBF.

IceDragon now behaving itself - I had to call in the dragon taming lad. However, the notifications tell me that people have been "Liking" the wrong things. Could you do something about this while you are in your "improving the user experience on CBF" mood? I'm sure it would help in your application for sainthood.

Sorry, that mood disappeared along with any free time this week - and not too worried about the sainthood, got pre-approved for Canonisation a long time ago subject to the prerequisite number of miracles being performed.

I have just noticed that you can only see the like button if you are signed in. So just letting you all know that.

Yes, that's so only members can Like Dave, otherwise we are in danger of being flooded by anonymous spam/likes
